After The Love Has Gone
Earth/Wind/Fire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For a while, to love was all we could do
We were young and we knew, and our eyes were alive
Deep inside we knew our love was true
For a while we paid no mind to the past
We knew love would last
Every night somethin' right
Would invite us to begin the dance
Somethin' happened along the way
What used to be happy was sad
Somethin' happened along the way
And yesterday was all we had

And oh, after the love has gone
How could you lead me on
And not let me stay around?
Oh, after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found?

For a while to love each other
With all we would ever need
Love was strong for so long
Never knew that what was wrong
Baby, wasn't right
We tried to find what we had
'Til sadness was all we shared
We were scared this affair
Would lead our love into
Somethin' happened along the way
Yesterday was all we had
Somethin' happened along the way
What used to be happy is sad
Somethin' happened along the way
And yesterday was all we had

And oh, after the love has gone
How could you lead me on
And not let me stay around?
Oh, oh, oh after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found?

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
After the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found
Oh, oh, oh, after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found
Oh oh, oh after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found
Oh, oh, oh

Oh, oh, oh after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found
Oh, oh, oh, after the love has gone

What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found

Overall Meaning

The song 'After The Love Has Gone' by Earth, Wind & Fire is a ballad about a relationship that has ended but the feelings still remain. The opening lyrics describe the time when love was all they could do, when they were young and full of life. They were aware of their feelings for each other and knew their love was true. They paid no attention to the past and believed love would last. Every night was an invitation to dance.

But then, something happened along the way, and what used to be happy turned sad. They were left with only memories of yesterday, and the love they once shared was gone. The chorus repeats the question of how one could lead on the other and not let them stay around, and if love that's lost can be found again.

The second verse reflects on the time when they were trying to hold on to what they had, but all they shared was sadness. They were scared that their relationship would lead them to a dead end. Again, the chorus repeats, with the same questions being raised about the loss of love and whether it can be found again.

Overall, 'After The Love Has Gone' provides a poignant reflection on lost love, as it is clear that the feelings have not gone away. The lyrics suggest that this love may never die, but the relationship has reached a point of no return.

I am 21, and still jamming out to this song. This song reminds me of my mom, she...unfortunately succumbed to colon cancer back in 2013. Every time I hear this song, it would make me sad, because she was my mom, she might've not been a good mom to yall, but to me, she was a great mom. She told me to be happy, she told me that not to cry about her, she told me that she will be in my heart and watching over me. Those were her last words. I dropped down my DS (ended up breaking it) and was crying at her side. I never thought I would lose my mom, and when they disconnected my mom from life support, I went running and hugging my dad and crying. Fast forward to May 25th, 2019, I was graduating. Once this song came on as the Graduation Song, I looked at my family, and I went running to them and cried. I wanted everyone to be there, including my mom. My friends were there to comfort me also. I really miss my mom. Someday mom, I will reunite with you again! Until then, I will try my hardest. I love you mom!

Let me lay some facts on you my fellow YouTube Listeners: This song was written b y David Foster, Jay Graydon and Bill Chaplin. It was first offered to the duo group " Hall & Oates."At the time they were not interested in recording any music that wasn't written by them. When D. Foster presented to Maurice White, he gave the song a thumbs up. Verdine White, brother of Maurice White, stated that it was the most difficult song they had ever recorded. They felt the vibe had to be right in order to pull it off. He went on to say they recorded 6 to 7 times before M. White said that's it. Thats the one. It found its way to #2 on Billboards 100 list in 1979 for 2 weeks. It took home 2 Grammy's. Best R&B duo or a group and Best R&B song Grammy for composers D. Foster and J. Graydon. And now you know. Lol

Not just 6-7 times. It was 6 days of trying before they felt that it was perfect.
