Kalimba Story
Earth Wind & Fire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Saw it in a store, one day
Thought it might make me play
Future music all for you
Seen me through my hardest times
Thought it was 'bout time, to open
A new world just for you

Fills all my needs, gave me the key
Door was open, for me to see
Playin around the world, touchin'
All the boys and girls with a new
Love to make them free

Kalimba, ooh kalimba, play me a tune
Kalimba, ooh kalimba, I'm glad I found you
Kalimba, ooh kalimba, play me a tune
Kalimba, ooh kalimba sends a message to you

If you lend an ear and you have no fear
The vibration will move your mind
It's new to you, sounds true to you
Sacred music before it's time

Play it for ya now, wanna see
Just how, my kalimba get next to you
Are you ready now, well get ready
Come along, groove with the new

Kalimba, ooh kalimba, play me a tune
Kalimba, ooh kalimba, I'm glad I found you
Kalimba, ooh kalimba, play me a tune
Kalimba, ooh kalimba sends a message to you

Kalimba, ooh kalimba, play me a tune
Kalimba, ooh kalimba sends a message to you

Kalimba, ooh kalimba sends a message to you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Earth Wind & Fire's song Kalimba Story primarily tell the story of the singer's discovery of a kalimba, a type of African thumb piano, in a store. The singer believes that this instrument will allow them to create music that connects with listeners all over the world, and describes how playing the kalimba has helped them through tough times. The kalimba is presented as a symbol of the power of music to bring people together and uplift their spirits.

The opening lines of the song convey something about the singer's personality - they are curious and open to discovering new things, such as a musical instrument they hadn't seen before. As the song goes on, the listener senses that the kalimba has brought something special into the singer's life. They describe playing it as "filling all my needs" and "opening a new world just for you." In these lines, the kalimba is a source of healing and inspiration.

The chorus is catchy and emphasizes the kalimba's power to connect with people wherever they are. The refrain, "Kalimba, ooh kalimba, play me a tune," implies that the instrument is a character in its own right - not just an object, but an active presence that interacts with the singer and the listener.

Overall, the song celebrates the beauty and universality of music, and the way that an instrument like the kalimba can open up new possibilities for artistic expression and human connection.

Outside of Duke Ellington’s orchestra in the jazz idiom, EWF is the greatest ensemble in African-American music. This song introduced an African instrument to pop music. Genius!

@gregoryclark176

... plus some funky rock & roll guitar on top of it!

EWF was their own genre!! ❤️

I'm 19 and learning to play the Kalimba and my Grandma recommended this song because of the Kalimba. It's a nice song and I smiled when I heard the kalimba being played in the background.
