Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bedbugs & Ballyhoo by Echo & the Bunnymen are a series of nonsensical phrases strung together. However, the repetition of certain words and phrases gives an impression of a cycle or a pattern that keeps on repeating. The opening verses feature the words "buffalo", "bison", "cannonball" and "rifle" which create a sense of violence and conflict. The second verse changes the mood to the more whimsical with "kangaroo", "chipmunk", "ballyhoo" and "bedbugs". These words have no direct connection to each other, but they create a playful and absurd impression. The chorus repeats the phrases "That's the way the thunder rumbles" and "That's the way the bee bumbles," which are metaphors for the natural cycles of the world. The final verse repeats the opening verses, finishing the song in a cyclical fashion.

Although the lyrics may seem arbitrary, they are meant to create an atmosphere of confusion and chaos. By repeating seemingly unrelated phrases, the song aims to convey a sense of the randomness of life, and the inevitability of cycles and patterns that we can't control. The repeated phrase "Down on your knees again, saying please again" emphasizes this sense of futility, as it suggests that we are constantly asking for something that we can't have. The image of being on one's knees also suggests submission and powerlessness, which reinforces the theme of the song.

Easily one of the best rhythm sections in Post- Punk. Awesome band and I was lucky enough to see them in Kansas City on this tour in 1988, with Screaming Blue Messiahs opening. I will never forget that night...

Echo and the Bunnymen were popular in the United States in the 80's and they performed quite often in New York

I saw Echo & the Bunnymen three times total. First was at Warfield in S.F. during spring break 1985. I then saw them twice after, the first at their first ever Portland, Ore. appearance - then again PDX. All three times, we made front row. Sadly, the Portland venue had no seats and we were literally getting crushed up front and had to be pulled out by security to prevent being suffocated.
