Butter
Echo 7 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your position speaks
So clearly now...
Face down
And I see that look of persistence
Is in your eyes
It's in your eyes

Jesus Christ can't save me now
I'm so alone
Jesus Christ can't save me now
I'm so...

I feel alive
Like your messiah
I'd like to peal back the flesh
And taste you...
And taste you

Jesus Christ can't save me now
I'm so alone
Jesus Christ can't save me now
I'm so...

Above me
Below me

You bring me
Absolution

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Echo 7's song Butter describe a poignant encounter with another person where the singer is being pinned down and feels helpless as the other person exerts their dominance over them. The first few lines, "Your position speaks, so clearly now...Face down, and I see that look of persistence is in your eyes" describes how the other person's body language and behavior are clearly showing their intent, and the singer is powerless to resist.

The chorus "Jesus Christ can't save me now, I'm so alone" suggests that the singer feels abandoned and helpless, and has lost their faith in any kind of divine intervention or justice. They feel completely alone in their predicament, and the repetition of this line drives home the sense of hopelessness and despair.

The second verse "I feel alive, like your messiah, I'd like to peel back the flesh and taste you" uses vivid, almost gruesome imagery to describe the strange mix of fear and desire that the singer feels for the other person. They are attracted to them, but also repulsed by their power over them. The final lines "Above me, below me, you bring me absolution" describe how the other person has complete control over the singer, and they feel that they can only find release or forgiveness through this experience.
