Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody
Eddie Fisher Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When you croon, croon a tune from the heart of Dixie
Hang that cradle mammy mine
Right on that Mason-Dixon Line
And swing it from Virginia
To Tennessee with all the soul that's in ya
Weep no more my lady
Just as though you had me on your knee
A million baby kisses I'll deliver
If you will only sing the Swanee Rive
Rock-a-bye your rock-a-bye baby with a Dixie melody
Rock-a-bye, hush-a-bye with a Dixie melody
When you croon, croon a tune from the heart of Dixie
Hang that cradle mammy mine
Right on that Mason-Dixon Line
And swing it from Virginia
To Tennessee with all the soul that's in ya
Mammy, mammy listen to what they're playing
They're playing 'Weep No More My Lady'
Sing it for me and old Black Joe
Just as though you had me on your knee
A thousand baby kisses I'll deliver
If you will only sing that Swanee River
Rock-a-bye your rock-a-bye baby with a Dixie melody
The lyrics to Eddie Fisher and The Golden Strings' song "Dixie" evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for the South, specifically the heart of Dixie. The song begins with the image of rocking a baby to sleep with a Dixie melody, symbolizing a soothing and comforting lullaby. The reference to the Mason-Dixon Line, which historically separated the Northern and Southern states in the United States, further emphasizes the connection and importance of the South in this song.
The lyrics then address "Mammy," who is urged to sing the song again, with mentions of the popular tune "Old Black Joe" and the iconic "Swanee River." These references tap into the rich musical heritage of the South, particularly the African-American spirituals and folk songs that emerged from this region. The repetition of "rock-a-bye" and the emphasis on delivering "baby kisses" reinforce the intimate and nurturing nature of the lyrics.
Overall, "Dixie" is a sentimental and evocative song that celebrates the musical and cultural heritage of the South. It seeks to transport listeners back to a simpler time, encouraging them to embrace the soulful melodies and emotions that emanate from this region.
