The Sound of Music
Eddie Fisher Lyrics

With the sound of music
With songs they have sung
For a thousand years
The hills fill my heart
With the sound of music
My heart wants to sing ev'ry song it hears
My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds
That rise from the lake to the trees
My heart wants to sigh like a chime that flies
From a church on a breeze
To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls
Over stones on its way
To sing through the night
Like a lark who is learning to prey
I go to the hills
When my heart is lonely
I know I will hear
What I've heard before
My heart will be blessed
With the sound of music
And I'll sing once more
"The Sound of Music" by Eddie Fisher is a song that celebrates the joy, beauty, and transformative power of music. The lyrics depict a deep connection between nature, the human heart, and the songs that have been sung throughout history. The hills symbolize a place where music thrives, where melodies have been echoing for centuries.
The song suggests that the hills, with their age-old songs, fill the singer's heart with music. It speaks to the universal desire to be moved by and participate in the power of music. The singer expresses a longing for his heart to sing every song it hears, wanting to be as free and expressive as a bird taking flight or a church bell carried by the wind.
The lyrics also describe the heart's desires: to laugh like a playful brook, to sing through the night like a lark, and to find solace in the hills when feeling lonely. The hills and the music they carry provide comfort and a sense of familiarity, reminding the singer of the beauty he has experienced before.
In essence, "The Sound of Music" is a tribute to the ability of music to touch our souls and bring us joy, healing, and a sense of belonging. It captures the universality of music, its ability to transcend time and connect us to a greater human experience.
