Downhearted
Eddie Fisher (Vocal) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ever since we parted, I've been downhearted
Whoever thought that I would miss you so
Oh please come back I beg, please baby please
What fools are we who cannot see the forest for the trees
Now I am the one that I outsmarted and I am downhearted
I lost the truest love I'll ever know
Oh how I yearn to hold you in my arms once again
And I will be downhearted till then.

Oh please come back I beg you, please baby please
What fools are we who cannot see the forest for the trees
Now I am the one that I outsmarted and I'm downhearted
I lost the truest love I'll ever know.

Oh how I yearn to hold you in my arms once again
And I will be downhearted till then

Overall Meaning

These lyrics speak of the sadness and regret one feels after a relationship has ended. The singer is downhearted and misses their lover deeply. They plead for their lover to come back to them, acknowledging that they were foolish to let them go in the first place. They express the realization that they had the most genuine and true love with this person and lost it due to their own mistake. The longing to be reunited with their lover is expressed repeatedly throughout the song, highlighting the pain and emptiness felt in their absence.

The chorus repeats the phrase "What fools are we who cannot see the forest for the trees," emphasizing the idea that sometimes we miss out on things that are right in front of us due to our own blindness and inability to see the bigger picture. This could also be interpreted as a reflection on the mistakes made in the relationship, indicating that the singer now understands their own missteps and wishes they had acted differently.

Overall, the lyrics of "Downhearted" convey the emotional turmoil and regret one feels after losing someone they deeply love. It highlights the importance of appreciating what we have before it's too late and encourages the listener to think twice before letting someone they love slip away.

Yes; between Sinatra and EP, there was Eddie as the teenage girls' delight; with his youthful charm and near operatic voice. That's often forgotten today, something that wouldn't have pleased him. His decline was sudden and has been blamed on Elvis, Mike Todd's wife, and rapidly changing adolescent tastes.
This song provides a clue to a fourth possibility: Eddie visited the same well 'many times', perhaps comfortable within a formula that supported his style, and original success.

Good ol' Eddie! One of the last of the "bobby soxers delights",before rock and roll dominated the music scene.

Thanks for uploading this. If it's from your 45, you've done a very good job with the restoration!

@the78prof it doesn’t sound like it isn’t from CD. I find that’s generally the case with vinyl from the 50s onwards which has been restored.
