If You Let Me
Eddie Kendricks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, I know I blew your mind
Oh, I just kept hangin' 'round you
I thought you needed me near, oh yes I did now
Thought someday we'd settle down, oh yeah

Try to run my game on you - no baby, no no
Just tryin' to make you know
If you let me, I know I can
I can sail a ship on dry land
Hey, if you let me, I know I can
Be a man, I wanna

I know you told me from the start how you felt
Oh, my mind was already made up, yes it was now
I was gonna take care of you, oh yeah (I really love you)
Instead I made things just a little rough on you, oh yeah

Try to run my game on you - no baby, no no
Just tryin' to make you know
If you let me, I know I can
I can build a house on quicksand (quicksand, baby)
If you let me, I know I can
Be a man, I wanna

Try to run my game on you - no baby, no no no
Just tryin' to make you see
My mind went up and left me
My heart's givin' in with you, yeah
Baby, I miss you
Oh, if you let me, I know I can
I can sail a ship on dry land
Hey, if you let me, I know I can
I can build a house on quicksand

Hey, if you let me, I know I can
I'll do anything you want me to baby, all you gotta do is let me

Overall Meaning

In "If You Let Me," Eddie Kendricks sings about his efforts to win back the love of his life. He acknowledges that he made mistakes and wasn't always there for her, but he pleads with her to give him another chance. He admits that he tried to play games with her in the past, but now he's ready to be the man she deserves. The chorus repeats that if she lets him in, he can do anything for her, including sailing a ship on dry land or building a house on quicksand. Eddie uses these extreme examples to show just how much he's willing to do for her if she gives him the chance.

One interesting thing about this song is that it was written by two members of the Motown group The Four Tops, Abdul Fakir and Three Dog Night's Chuck Negron, who were looking to branch out as songwriters. "If You Let Me" was one of the first songs they wrote together.

Another interesting fact is that Eddie Kendricks was initially hesitant to release the song as a single because he didn't think it was a strong enough follow-up to his previous hit, "Keep On Truckin'." However, the song ended up becoming a top 40 hit on the US R&B charts.

The song's production quality is also notable, with its use of soaring strings and harmonies that give the song an epic quality. The use of the deep bass and funkiness, typical of Motown hits, blended very well with Eddie bright, floaty tenor voice.

Interestingly, the song has been covered by several artists, including Barry White, who recorded his version in 1987. Another Motown alum, Diana Ross, also recorded a version of the song in 1977.

The song's lyrics have been interpreted to represent the struggles of the civil rights movement in the United States, with Eddie Kendricks representing a metaphorical "man" trying to make things right after years of prejudice and mistreatment.

Additionally, the song has been played in movies, such as “Boomerang” (1992) and “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012).

The chords of this song are:
Verse: F#m, Bm, A, E
Chorus: D, E, A.
