Santiago's career took off in 1986 in Puerto Rico and Latin America as a soloist, formimg his own band, and recording songs including: "Tú me quemas" (You Burn Me), "Qué Locura Enamorarme de Ti" (What Madness To Fall in Love With You), "Me Fallaste" (You Failed Me), Antidoto y Veneno (Antidote and Venom), "Tu Me Haces Falta" (I Need You) and his best known hit "Lluvia" (Rain, not to be confused with Menudo's hit of the same name), and many others with his fame eventually spreading to Europe and the United States making him one of the most popular Salsa singer in the late 80's and early 90's. He was one of the main singers singing what was called "Salsa Romantica", romantic salsa, due to the romanticism present in the lyrics.
His first major recording on an international label was with Sony Music in 1999. He also recorded for the TH, EMI Latin, and Polygram labels, including the well regarded production inspired by the music of Rafael Hernández, entitled "Enamorado".

The lyrics of Eddie Santiago's song "Bella Y Cruel" are about a relationship that is toxic and harmful to the singer. He is being hurt by every word and look his partner gives him, and yet he is still in love with her. She is described as poison that hurts and kills, and also as a fury dressed like an angel, indicating she might not be what she appears on the surface. He compares her to the wind that pushes his boat, but then disappears, leaving him with nothing. He asks her to tell him what he should do since he feels like he is just a temporary game to her, and he doesn't want to love her anymore. He is begging her to break his heart already and say goodbye, so he can move on.
The chorus, "Dime tú, bella y cruel, si quieres romper mi corazón" ("Tell me, beautiful and cruel, if you want to break my heart") emphasizes the singer's feeling of helplessness in the situation, as he is aware that he is playing a dangerous game, but he cannot stop himself from being lured back into her grasp.
