Get Ready
Eddie and the Tide Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never met a girl who makes me feel the way that you do
(it's alright)
Whenever I'm asked who makes my dreams real
I say that you do
(you're outta sight)
So fee fi fo fum

Look out baby 'cause here I come
And I'm bringing you a love that's true so get ready
So get ready
I'm gonna try to make love to you so get ready
So get ready here I come
I'm on my way

If you wanna play hide and seek with love let me remind you
(it's alright)
The loving you're gonna miss and the time it takes to find you
(it's outta sight)
So fiddle-lee-dee fiddle-lee-dum

Look out baby 'cause here I come
And I'm bringing you a love that's true so get ready
So get ready
I'm gonna try to make love to you so get ready
So get ready here I come
I'm on my way

All my friends shouldn't want me to I understand it
(be alright)
I hope I'll get to you before they do the way I planned it
(be outta sight)
So twiddle-dee-dee twiddle dee dum

Look out baby 'cause here I come
And I'm bringing you a love that's true so get ready
So get ready
I'm gonna try to make love to you so get ready
So get ready here I come.
I'm on my way.
Get ready 'cause here I come, boy

Get ready 'cause here I come, boy
Get ready 'cause here I come, boy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eddie and the Tide’s “Get Ready” convey the singer’s desire to pursue a woman he is deeply attracted to. He describes her as someone who makes him feel a way that nobody else has before. He claims that she is responsible for making his dreams a reality, and compares her to a magical being by saying “fee fi fo fum.” It is clear that he is determined to win her over, as he announces his intentions to “make love” to her.

The lyrics describe a playful, flirty pursuit of love. The singer employs children’s rhymes such as “fiddle-lee-dee” and “twiddle-dee-dee” to convey the light-hearted, youthful nature of his desire. He is confident that he can beat out any competition: “All my friends shouldn't want me to, I understand it. I hope I'll get to you before they do the way I planned it (be outta sight).”

Throughout the song, the singer’s energy crescendos as he becomes more and more determined to win his love interest over. By repeating “get ready” and “here I come,” he is rallying himself up for the pursuit. The lyrics, therefore, paint a picture of a determined, confident lover who is willing to do what it takes to win the woman he desires.

Rock Dog

Seen these guys all over the Bay Area-
Oakland (bar hwy 13)Uncle Charlie's - New Georges - Napa County Fair Cotati Cab. Etc. They rocked all the shows- better than Eric Martin - they just missed it.
When Grunge took over it wiped them out- as many other bands in this style- but time has no patience - that's YouTube's job now-
Let's take the car out one last time and go see the one that got away Steve-

Just a theory Rock Dog -- I think if they were managed a little differently and produced a little more edgier they could've survived.

The late Eddie Money did (and he produced one of their albums), Bruce Springsteen did and still does. They had good songs and played well and Eddie Rice is a great vocalist. When challenged by grunge or whatever an artist needs to write a song that's cutting edge, controversial, left-field, a little damning, a little spicy, saucy -- whatever it takes...but they didn't.

So yes, they were tossed aside but grunge but grunge didn't come overnight. Eddie and the Tide could've retooled.

The Clash wasn't all punk and new wave -- they were based solidly in 50's rock n' roll and 60's rock with a tint of reggae -- and politics with aggression. This is why they survived despite The Sex Pistols, Elvis Costello & all those hairband spandex techno jerks. But The Clash had the smarts.

There's no reason Eddie & the Tide should've bitten the dust so soon. Like the '60s bands had to dump the Farfisa, Eddie may have needed to dump the synths. As a straight forward rock band, they could've stayed with their heads above water. Certains artists always do -- The Stones, The Who, Status Quo, all those southern-fried rock bands.

Eddie and his band certainly were a better band than say Survivor and that lame music like "Eye of the Tiger," which they still play on classic rock radio ad nauseum.
