Molly
Eddy Arnold Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The war began and Henry left his farm
Left his darling Molly with a baby in her arms
Now the war was over and their life could begin
Molly saw her darling standing at the door again

It's so nice to hear your voice again Molly
So nice to feel your arms around me Molly
Oh how happy I'd be if I only could see you
Sweet sweet Molly please don't cry

Maybe I should have written to let you know ahead a time
But I was afraid that you'd worry if you knew that I'd gone blind
Do I hear you crying Molly please don't cry you silly thing
See what you've done you've even brought a tear into my eye

Oh how happy I'd be if I only could see you
Sweet sweet Molly please don't cry

Where's my son why does he looks like Molly
Everybody says he took after me Lord I wish I could see
Come here little man don't be afraid I'm your daddy
Guess he'll get used to me in time won't he Molly

It's so nice to hear your voice again Molly
Please don't cry

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eddy Arnold's song "Molly" tell the story of a young couple, Henry and Molly, who were separated due to the war. Henry left his farm and his dear wife, Molly, behind with a newborn baby in her arms. The war finally ended, and Henry returned home to be reunited with Molly. He was thrilled to hear her voice again and feel her loving arms around him. The couple had endured separation and heartache, but now that they were finally reunited, they could begin their life together.

As the song continues, Henry confesses to Molly that he should have written to let her know that he had gone blind during the war. He was afraid of making her worry, and so he stayed silent. Molly can't help but cry at the news, and Henry comforts her, saying that he wishes he could see her, too. Even though he cannot see her face, he knows that he loves her deeply and is grateful to be back home with her and their child.

The final verse reveals that Henry's son looks like Molly, and everyone tells him that he takes after his father. Even though he cannot see his son's face, he reassures the child that he is his daddy and that they will grow to love each other. Despite the challenges they have faced, the couple is overjoyed to be reunited and grateful for the love they share. The lyrics capture the emotional journey of a couple who have been separated by war but are finally reunited and able to begin their life together.

The lyrics are heart-wrenching and sad, but Eddy's gentle, enveloping voice and quiet guitar sound soothes.

Glen McGregor

A sad, so sweet song, story. Makes your heart sing to know that he had went away to war, but was blessed to come home to his loving wife and child. Would be a beautiful story line for a movie. A real story, real feeling. No special effects, no computer enhancement. Eddy does such a wonderful job, as always.

Recorded in 1963. This is a civil war song. A soldier returns home to his wife and son, blind. There was a longer version, but was pulled. Thanks for the post Catlover. You came along just when U-TUBE pulled their copy.
