Close Every Door
Edgar Villarroel Lyrics

Joseph

Close every door to me,
Hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows
And shut out the light
Do what you want with me,
Hate me and laugh at me
Darken my daytime
And toture my night
If my life were important I
Would ask will I live or die
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world
Close every door to me,
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel
Are never alone
For I know I shall find
My own peace of mind
For I have been promised
A land of my own

Children

Close every door to me,
Hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows
And shut out the light
Joseph

Just give me a number
Instead of my name
Forget all about me
And let me decay
I do not matter,
I'm only one person
Destroy me completely
Then throw me away
If my life were important I
Would ask will I live or die
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world

Joseph, Ensemble & Children

Close every door to me,
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel
Are never alone
For we know we shall find
Our own peace of mind

For we have been promised
A land of our own

Overall Meaning

In "Close Every Door," Joseph, the main character, sings about his loneliness, isolation, and despair. He begs for all doors and windows to be closed, so he can be left in darkness, even though it may cause him pain. He then pleads to be forgotten and left to die, stating that his life has no worth, and that he is only one person. Though he acknowledges that his life may not matter, he still knows the answer to his problems does not exist in the world around him. Despite the pain and suffering, the Children of Israel, of whom Joseph is one, are promised a land of their own, which he hopes will bring him peace of mind.
