Edison Lighthouse was the alias of songwriters and producers Tony McCaulay and Barry Mason, with session vocalist Tony Burrows' vocals on the hit 'Love Grows', although members of the group Greenfield Hammer were eventually brought in to perpetuate the image of a real working band.
After the success of "Love Grows", Fradkin returned from New York City to join this newly formed British group as an original member of Edison Lighthouse. The recording of "Love Grows" proved to be a worldwide success reaching number five in the USA on the Billboard singles hot 100 chart in February 1970 and became a number-one hit the world over, selling a total of eight million copies. In fact, for the whole of 1970 it was the number-two selling pop record in the U.K.

Funny how love can be
Wonder why she pretends I'm not there
Funny how love can be, girl
Funny how love can be
There she is with that look in her eyes
Does she know how it's making me cry
Funny how love can be, girl
Funny how love can be
What a thing to happen
I'm left without a friend
What a thing to happen
So funny how true love can be
I can tell that she just doesn't care
How can I make her see
I'm in love but it just isn't fair
Funny how love can be, girl
Funny how love can be
What a thing to happen
I'm left without a friend
What a thing to happen
So funny how true love can be
I can tell that she just doesn't care
How can I make her see
I'm in love but it just isn't fair
Funny how love can be, girl
Funny how love can be
Funny how love can be
The lyrics to Edison Lighthouse's "Funny How Love Can Be" explore the complexity of love and its unpredictable nature. The song depicts a situation in which the singer is in love with someone who doesn't appear to reciprocate their feelings. The first verse opens with the singer observing the object of their affection with "her nose in the air," suggesting her haughty demeanor. The singer then muses on how funny love can be, perhaps alluding to the irony of falling for someone who doesn't return one's affections.
In the second verse, the singer describes how the object of their affections has "that look in her eyes" and "hasn't got time" for them. The singer reflects on how this knowledge makes them feel, including making them cry. The song's bridge acknowledges how difficult it is to be in this situation and feeling "left without a friend." The final verse brings the song to its conclusion, with the singer expressing frustration at not being able to make the object of their affection see their feelings.
Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of unrequited love and the pain it can cause. The song's catchy melody and upbeat rhythm belie its bittersweet lyrics, creating a musical juxtaposition that enhances the message of the song.
