After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house, and joining a 12-step program for addiction, Ebert began work on a story about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. According to Ebert, Sharpe "was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind ... but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos in Los Angeles, California, United States. In the summer of 2009, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert and Castrinos toured the country with a group of fellow musicians in a big white school bus.
Its song "Home" was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100's 2009 countdown, the largest music poll in the world.

All Wash Out
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Stumbling 'gainst the wind
Singing love, love is something to believe in
A prayer and the sea
And twenty tons of me
Crying love, love is something to believe in
To my child of wonder rambling
Let it all wash out in the rain
Yes let it all wash out in the rain
Beyond the drunken focus of my aim
All my heroes twisting in the flame
Let's let it all wash out in the rain
Let it all wash out in the rain
One more for forgiveness
Twisting in the cold
Singing love, love is something I believe in
Too much my defenses
Are dangling from the chain
Oh but free, free is something to believe in
To my god I want my gypsy train
Too my child a howlin' tambourine
Let it all wash out in the rain
Let it all wash out in the rain
Yes let it all wash out in the rain
Let it all wash out in the rain
The lyrics of "All Wash Out" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are about accepting the impermanence of life and relinquishing control. The first verse describes a "chilly preacher" stumbling "'gainst the wind" and singing about love as something to believe in. This preacher is juxtaposed with the image of "twenty tons of me," crying out for love. The second verse describes a sense of disillusionment, where the singer's aim is drunken and their heroes are "twisting in the flame." The chorus serves as a release, inviting the listener to let it all wash out in the rain. The singer is asking for forgiveness and acknowledges that their defenses are failing. Ultimately, the song encourages us to let go and allow life to wash over us, rather than trying to control it.
The song was written by frontman Alex Ebert, who has said that it was inspired by a conversation he had with his mother about the impermanence of life. He has also described the song as a "gospel" of sorts, encouraging listeners to let go of their attachments and embrace the present moment. Interestingly, the song was originally titled "All Washed Out," but Ebert changed it to "All Wash Out" after realizing that the former sounded too much like "All Dressed Up," which he felt was too similar to a song by The Beatles.

Sophia is the actor in the film.
Here's her story.
Dear Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Thank you for your incredible music. I first heard your songs, when my sweet sister Sophie entered a music video contest producing a video for your song: ‘All Wash Out’. The combination of your beautiful music and her great talent has left an eternal imprint on my mind.
Sophie, my little sister was just 20 when she entered the contest. This Sunday we played the video at her memorial service. She passed away recently during an exchange semester in Prague. She suffered from a brain hemorrhage and just never woke up from her sleep one night.
I find the description (which went along with her video); ‘A girl goes on a journey to wash away what’s behind her leading to her rebirth’ incredibly moving as she would have no idea that she would soon leave this earth. Sophie was not meant to act in the video, but due to incredible karmic circumstances, the actress who was supposed to participate was prevented to come (last minute) and Sophie stepped in. Both acting and directing.
It gives indescribable joy and comfort to be able to turn to this video, during this period of grieving and to know that it will stay with us. She spread such an unbelievable amount of joy and light during her—much too short – life. And has left the world forever richer.
I realize that it is a long shot, but it would mean very, very much to us if there were any way you would be able to help share this last memory of Sophie. In any case, I truly thank you for having been a catalyst in Soph leaving the world this beautiful video.
I apologize that my English is not sufficient to express my emotions (I am from Denmark), but I hope it has made sense.
Thank you again, Luna.

She seems like the kind of woman who appreciated everything there is to life and who made everyday count. Whilst her body may be resting in peace; I'm certain her soul is still dancing.
