Come In Peace
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once upon a time I was the hurricane boy
There was no eye in me for you to hide
Head low don't show oceans in my eyes
As the waves clap goodbye to sorrow

Daddy's on the mountain yellin' at the bloody sky
Mama's in the mirror actin' out another life
Children in the schoolyard singin' "everybody dies"
And I am on the corner with a sentimental eye
I am on the corner singin' sentimental lies

Hopped up on a gypsy train with tracks that you can hide
That way no storm could follow our tomorrows
But shackled to a suitcase full of automatic thunder
Clap
All hail to death's boy-wonder

JJ's in the kitchen talking bout the end of times
Mo's thowin' Kerouac to Catch Her In the Rye
Tempermental yogis bakin' merry weather pie
And I am on the corner with a sentimental eye
I am on the corner singin' sentimental lies

Sometimes said it's sun time
Let it sunshine on my mind

All the same its conscience waiting
Cross the line

Last night I dreamed myself upon a golden glade
The clouds passed in and out of my reflection
And everyone I've known held my hands till they were clay
And the storm finally bled from my complexion

Now Jadey's on the mountain singing "We will never die"
The band is in the rainbow playin' love for you and I
Heath is riding shotgun aimin' at the paper sky
And I am only "I am" now I've opened up my eye
I am only "I am" that I've opened up my eye

Sometimes said its sun time
Let it sunshine on my mind
Healing I need healing
A good feeling I can shine
Feel it like you can see it
Like you can dream it in your mind
Sunny Hallelujah comin' to ya
Rain or shine

All the same its conscience waiting
Cross the line

All the same its conscience waiting

Overall Meaning

The song "Come in Peace" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is a powerful and complex reflection on the struggles of life and the possibility of finding peace in the midst of chaos. The opening lines of the song set the tone, with the singer identifying himself as the "hurricane boy" with "no eye" for anyone else. The image of a storm is prevalent throughout the song, with references to waves, thunder, and the storm finally "bleeding" from the singer's complexion. The chorus urges the listener to find peace and light even in the midst of difficult times: "Sometimes said it's sun time, let it sunshine on my mind."

The middle verses of the song introduce other characters facing their own struggles, such as JJ talking about the end of times and Mo throwing Kerouac to "Catch Her in the Rye." The singer himself acknowledges that he has been "singing sentimental lies" and is now seeking a new way of being. The final verse brings resolution, with Jadey on the mountain singing "we will never die" and the band playing love for all. The singer is now "only 'I am'" and has opened up his eye to see the beauty and possibility of life.

Overall, the song is a call to find inner peace and togetherness, even in the midst of turmoil and strife. The imagery of storms and chaos is contrasted with the possibility of healing and light, and the song invites the listener to join in the quest for peace and love.

“Run your fingers through my soul. For once, just once, feel exactly what I feel, believe what I believe, perceive as I perceive, look, experience, examine, and for once; just once, understand.” - this song

My dad fought in Vietnam and my mom was a hippie who protested the Vietnam War, and my mom heard this song and thought it was a band from her high school years in the late 60s LOL I made her a huge fan of this band! I actually bought this album on vinyl and that's the only way my mom and I like to listen to it because she said it feels nostalgic to her.
