Collins' music is mostly electric guitar-driven pop, and his songwriting and vocal delivery range from the acerbicly satirical to the soulfully tender, although he is better known for the former. He built his own studio in 1994 and produced his own third solo album, Gorgeous George. He has also worked as producer with other artists, including The Proclaimers, The Cribs, and Little Barrie. Collins also produced and starred in the Channel 4 sitcom West Heath Yard.
Collins lives with his long term partner, Grace Maxwell, who also manages his career. The couple, who live in London, have one son.
In a BBC 6 Music radio interview on 18 February 2005 Collins had said he felt unwell, but ascribed the nausea and vertigo to food poisoning. Two days later he was admitted to intensive care in London's Royal Free Hospital after apparently suffering a major cerebral haemorrhage. On 25 February he underwent an operation, reportedly after suffering a second haemorrhage. The procedure was successful, and Collins began a lengthy programme of neurological rehabilitation.
Sept 2007 saw the release of Home Again, the first album since his illness. Recorded before Collins’ hospitalisation but only mixed and produced after his recovery, Edwyn worked on the album during his recovery. He was heard to sing a few bars on BBC Radio 4's Front Row, sharing strumming and chord duties with Grace. 'Crap' he said afterwards; some listeners begged to differ.

I'm running through the field
When I'm alone I miss you
Back at my house, I don't, yet
I still believe in you
Maybe you want me to
My love
I'm running out of answers
I'm running myself on red
But it's alright, it's alright
The best of us do from time to time
Another night, another night
Not knowing what to do
I still believe in you
Maybe you want me to
But it's ok to still hear the voices
Running round your brain
Cause they still sound the same
I still believe in you
Maybe you want me to
The lyrics of Edwyn Collins's song "I Still Believe In You" seem to be about a person who is struggling to move on from a past relationship. The singer is depicted as running through the backwoods and the fields, seeking solace and trying to cope with the painful memories of his past love. He admits that when he is alone, he misses his former partner, but when he is at home, he doesn't feel as affected.
The chorus of the song has the singer stating his continued faith and belief in his former lover, despite the fact that the relationship has ended. He acknowledges that he may be the only one who still has faith in the relationship, but he chooses to hold on to that hope nonetheless.
The singer also feels lost and uncertain at times, as he runs out of answers and runs himself on red. However, he reassures himself that it is alright, as the best of us go through such situations from time to time. He also acknowledges that hearing the voices of his past relationship in his head is not a bad thing, as they still sound the same.
Overall, "I Still Believe In You" is a song that explores the theme of love and loss, and the struggle to overcome the pain of a breakup. It portrays a protagonist who is trying to move on, yet has difficulty doing so, and remains hopeful that the relationship can be salvaged.

A Girl Like You
I've never known a girl like you before
Now just like in a song from days of yore
Here you come a knockin', knockin' at my door
And I've never met a girl like you before
You give me just a taste so I want more and more
Now my hands are bleeding and my knees are raw
Now you've got me crawlin', crawlin' on the floor
And I've never met a girl like you before
You've made me acknowledge the devil in me
I hope to God I'm talkin' metaphorically
Hope that I'm talkin' allegorically
Know that I'm talkin' about the way I feel
And I've never known a girl like you before
Never, never, never, never
Never known a girl like you before
This old town's changed so much
Don't feel like I belong
Too many protest singers
Not enough protest songs
And now you've come along
Yes you've come along
And I've never met a girl like you before
