Collins' music is mostly electric guitar-driven pop, and his songwriting and vocal delivery range from the acerbicly satirical to the soulfully tender, although he is better known for the former. He built his own studio in 1994 and produced his own third solo album, Gorgeous George. He has also worked as producer with other artists, including The Proclaimers, The Cribs, and Little Barrie. Collins also produced and starred in the Channel 4 sitcom West Heath Yard.
Collins lives with his long term partner, Grace Maxwell, who also manages his career. The couple, who live in London, have one son.
In a BBC 6 Music radio interview on 18 February 2005 Collins had said he felt unwell, but ascribed the nausea and vertigo to food poisoning. Two days later he was admitted to intensive care in London's Royal Free Hospital after apparently suffering a major cerebral haemorrhage. On 25 February he underwent an operation, reportedly after suffering a second haemorrhage. The procedure was successful, and Collins began a lengthy programme of neurological rehabilitation.
Sept 2007 saw the release of Home Again, the first album since his illness. Recorded before Collins’ hospitalisation but only mixed and produced after his recovery, Edwyn worked on the album during his recovery. He was heard to sing a few bars on BBC Radio 4's Front Row, sharing strumming and chord duties with Grace. 'Crap' he said afterwards; some listeners begged to differ.
I've Got It Bad

Seems like you walked right out of my past
Oh, you swore we never met before?
And I know the reasons why you're shy
Of these feelings that we can't deny
But it's not forbidden, why keep it hidden
I know your love is tender and warm
'Cause you got it on and I've got it bad
Some kind of magic about you, I can't explain
And now you put your spell on me
And I know I'll never be the same
And I'm wondering is it self deceit
'Cause without you I feel incomplete
But it's not forbidden, why keep it hidden
I know your love is tender and warm
Caught in your head lights shimmering bright
'Cause you got it on and I've got it bad
And I can still see you when I asked if you would stay
Well you looked right through me when you turned and walked away
But intuitively I knew that someday I'd make you mine
And even though our pasts were a skew, I knew they'd cross in time
And it's not forbidden, why keep it hidden
I know your love is tender and warm
Caught in your head lights shimmering bright
'Cause you got it on and I've got it bad
You've got it on, I've got it bad
You've got it on, I've got it bad
You've got it on and I've got it bad
And I can still see you, I can still see you
I can still see you, yes, I can still see you
In "I've Got It Bad," Edwyn Collins sings about his strong attraction to someone who he feels like he has a past with. He's drawn to this person, but they seem hesitant to acknowledge what they have in common. Collins understands that the reasons for the person's shyness stem from their shared feelings that they're both trying to deny. He tries to convince them that they don't have to keep their connection hidden, reminding them that their attraction isn't forbidden.
The singer's attraction to this person is so intense that he compares it to being caught in headlights. He can't quite explain their magical hold on him, but he knows that he won't ever be the same. He feels incomplete without them and wonders if his feelings are just wishful thinking. But even if they are, he believes that there is a greater force at play that is pushing them toward each other.
The final verse of the song reveals that the two have met before, even if the person doesn't remember. The singer insists that they will eventually end up together, despite their complicated pasts. He urges them to stop hiding their feelings and embrace their mutual attraction.
Overall, "I've Got It Bad" is a song about the thrill and uncertainty of unrequited love. Collins captures the feeling of being drawn to someone whom you feel like you know but can't quite place, and the hope that maybe, someday, they'll see you and feel the same way.
