But just in case, both (Finished) coats are steel trowel on, the two coat base coat will crack like an egg if you steel trowel the brown coat as this brown coat won't be able to breath, thus lots of hairline cracking in a few months to a year.Hard rubber float the brown coat, (this is the second coat prior to the first which is called a scratch coat) (To simplify the scratch coat and brown coat are called a basecoat at least here in the U.S.)( or you can say the first coat and the second coat are called a basecoat, same thing)Now hydrate properly with the proper cure time at least 3 weeks this (baseCoat), now my friend you are ready to steel trowel your Finish coats on.
Make sense? It's quite complicated at first so if it does not, remember, old Kirk can't understand electricity either but know that by flipping a switch a light will come on.

@Jim Nichols HI Jim, great question, first of all since you steel trowelled the walls this act seals the stucco, no worries, however these wall take a bit longer to cure.
My advice is to soak the crap out of these wall, take as much time as needed until the water has penetrated to the lath, yes the full one inch thick.
These walls will hairline crack, they are supposed to.
Give as much cure time as you feel necessary, FYI, stucco can be applied 1/4 inch to 2 inches sometimes thicker, however rules are if you want to be consistent with window trim, drip screeds and such 3/4 of and inch for the basecoat.
The color coat is applied roughly 1/8 of an inch.
Lastly color will adhere to the base coat the best with the right amount of water applied to the basecoat first, no one should apply a color finish to a dry wall. Why? If you do this it will not adhere well because the wall will suck out the water in the finish coat, the wall has to be moist and waiting for the finish coat,

Morning Kirk, cool name, Thank you for the kind words. Yes, lime basecoats and finishes are engineered to be applied about sixteen of an inch thick.
Big deal, or so what! This is for covering drywall or sheetrock.
If you apply each coat a half-inch or even an inch, what happens? "Nothing."
They may develop some spider checking. Here's how to avoid that spider checking.
Keep an eye on these coats, whether they are the base or the finish coats BEFORE they set.
When almost set, go over them with a WET TROWEL gentle, then say goodbye to the checking.
Rember, the key or secrete is when you apply, and interior lime finish too thick, right before they set, keep your trowel continuously wet, and lightly, go over them, then say good-buy to spider checking and or any other blemishes or what is called holidays.
Now you know.

FYI, the word "Veneer" means a thin layer. It has nothing to do with the lime plaster.

Howdy Art, with cinder blocks, bricks, or concrete walls, only a skim coat is necessary.
No stucco nettings are necessary.
A scratch coat is usually applied over stucco netting that is attached on a wood wall, then a second coat is applied over the scratch.
A skim coat is about 1/2 thick as opposed to 3/8 thick, which is usually a scratch coat depth.
A half-inch thick is what I recommend over cinderblocks so that when it rains, the grout does not ghost through the new stucco.
If your planning on painting, any grout lines won't show through the painted finish anyway.
What happens if you add a little more or less stucco?
Glad you asked. Nothing, it happens all the time, so dont sweat it.

Good information! As a tile guy I use your tips when I am floating walls , I’m assuming our mud is similar, I use a BMI wall float , scratch and brown then rub down with cedar wood float, I get some cracks and sometimes to many, steel trowel I get less cracks but I very lightly go over it , I try not to over trowel it with steel . But after watching this I will try the sponge float and see what works best. Thanks

Howdy internet dude, keep in mind you will have less hairline cracking when its floated with the green sponge, but by sponge floating the sand will now come to the surface, for tiling this is no big deal, in fact, it will help the tile bond better as opposed to a steel trowel finish.
When you steel trowel stucco or plaster this action often seals the mud which makes adhering a bit more difficult.

You said, "Portland Cement has sand, concrete had aggregate." I understood what you ment. But to clarify for people that aren't in any form of construction and literally don't know a thing about cement, stucco, concrete E.T.C. Portland is a type of cement. Portland is the Main cement ingredient in MOST mixes that is the binding agent. Portland doesn't have sand in it. Stucco has sand mixed in it. For example you go to HomeDepot Or Lowes, you find bags of straight Portland cement. (Then u can mix your own ratio of sand to it to make stucco, motor or concrete.) Or there is Mason mix, or S-type, s-stype stucco, concrete 3000psi, concrete 5000 psi. e.t.c. Pure cement by itself once water is added is SO sticky you almost cannot get it off your shovel let alone work with it. That's why it's mixed with sand, stone etc. Portland is type of cement. Portland mixed with sand is called Morter. Usually 3-1 ratio, 3 sand 1 Portland. This creates more volume, texture and makes it usable. That same mixture and then add (example) 3/8" stone to the Portland, sand mix this makes concrete. Some mix Portland, sand, calcium then their stone. There is a few types of mixs and multiple variations of this. I.E demographics makes a difference depending on the avaliable aggregates.
That's my brief example. But I just felt was needed based of of his comment, " Portland with sand, or Portland with stone is concrete."
It wasn't entirely true/accurate. Very vague. I hope this helps anyone who didn't know understand better. Also some brands premixed, i.e already in bag's, stucco or motor do not have a good blend of cement/sand ratio. This in turn makes them not as sticky. This is easily solved by adding acrylic glue to your mix. I also not only add it to my mix but also brush it on the wall before applying the stucco. This is also good to do first before any application, then in between coats, i.e after scratch coat. This is good using mortor too. Example fixing concrete steps or cracks on sidewalks or curbs. Brush on the acrylic glue it helps concrete, mortor, stucco etc bond to whatever your applying it too.
Hope this clarified for anyone that was unsure.

However, you can clean them then apply a bonding agent over them so that the new stucco will adhere permanently.

Thank you very much for the video and clarification at the end. I want to plaster a 3' high concrete wall I poured last year, with a smooth finish. I was concerned until the end of the video, now realize I can steel trowel to get the finish I want. Thank you also for the video on shaping the tops and corners to get the rounded finish with a straight edge to build the corner material out.. I would not be doing my little stucco jobs nearly as well, without your channel and excellent teaching !

Good day Kirk, I’ve been following for some time now and enjoying putting all this into practice.

All understood regarding the cracking. QUESTION! Whilst the 3 finishes (light, heavy and rubber float) are breathable. I imagine painting it or bridging/flooding it after curing will seal it?

I’m about to undertake this on my place in the UK where the conditions are generally wet .

Hi Ralph, not much really, except I'd suggest at least two weeks, However, we did a Jamba juice building, I told the contractor to wait a month before painting, On our way the next day to another job I noticed he painted it the next day. I asked why, He yelled at me, I have no time for waiting I have to open this shop. The paint can blister if the PH level is not cured enough.🍾

Hi Kirk, I really enjoy your videos. I am currently doing a stucco job and am suddenly wondering if I might have screwed up. I decided to go with a fiberglass enriched scratch and brown coat mix. I could only get 5/8' casing bead, so I did one coat at 5/8" and plan on doing a color coat over that. The area which I am doing is really cut up with windows and small margins ( as small as 6") between windows, corners, and soffits. Hardly any room to move! The laying on the heavy coat took some time, with my having to use a margin trowel for many of the areas...Anyway, I ended up finishing with a steel trowel finish. Thankfully I cured it well and there are really no hairlines to speak of. My question is, is it going to be hard to get the color coat to stick to the steel trowel finish since it seems very well sealed? and also, how heavy can the cement-based color coat be applied? Thanks in advance for your expert advice!

Howdy, my Grim, tooling with water depending on the color will lighten the color or bleach it depending on how much water is used.
It's like pouring Clorox on blue jeans, some folks love it some think you did something wrong. If I were you I'd let the folks know that anytime water is used on colored stucco it bleaches the color a little or a lot, this way, they can say, we like that, or no we want it solid like a painted surface.🤙

Great YouTube channel!! I've been following for a few years now and you sir are the epitome of a craftsman. First, awesome name by the way :-). Second, can these same finishes be achieved using USG diamond finishes? I'm in St. Louis and my home was built in 1960 so I have plaster board with a scratch coat, then a sand veneer. I'm trying to get the sand texture to match which looks like your light float from what I can tell. I've done one sample but it looks like I used to much water on my sponge float so I'll be trying a dry float and one with just a little water. Again thank you for this channel and the information you provide!!

Cool beans daddieo, structo -lite has not been sold in 80-pound bags since I was an apprentice. All stucco and plasters get old like us.

Evening Phil, as a rule, I use steel or carbon steel trowels when plastering inside, it's so much easier to achieve smooth finishes with gypsum as gypsum has no sand to try to steel trowel portland cement down flat is impossible as the sand can only be troweled down so much.

how long do you let the second coat sit before doing the heavy float (Wet) (bottom left)? I have some concrete block columns I want to apply this finish onto. Scratch coat was applied years ago. I'm finally getting to it. Do I need to add an adhesion additive or anything? Also, can I get any of these coatings at the box stores?Love your videos. very informative.

Great video. Thank you. Question for you: do you always have to wait 48 hours between the first coat scratch and the second brown coat in a 2 coat system? The reason why I'm wondering, I saw some stucco company come in and do the neighbors house, and they did a first coat scratch, then waited a few hours and did the second brown, then in a hour or so did a orange peel knock down. They did all this in one day. If it can be done in one day, I think I'll want to try it.If not, I'll gladly wait the 48 hours.

Hi Kirk,

You mention painting at the end of this video. I had been considering painting the stucco on my house, but through research I read that you shouldn't paint stucco since it's a water-permeable system. Painting, I'm told, can actually damage the underlying water barrier and then the stucco in the long run. So is it possible to paint, and if so, what kind of pain can one use on stucco?

Howdy Marc, there is a big controversy over to paint or not to paint, if you have a three coat plaster system with an integrated maintenance free color finish that last hundreds of years don't paint.

Good evening Edward, excellent question. Before the plaster sets.😏
I usually look at the plaster and can tell by the color, if it starts to lighten then it could be too late.
As a rule, depending on the weather for about 20 minutes.
Imagine a brick when wet and how dark it is, when it starts to lighten than it's drying, don't allow this to happen or it will be too late to steal trowel it unless serious strength is used. We want to use skill rather than strength as a rule anyway.

Can you texture stucco with a stamp? I've seen houses that look like stucco treated with a brick or stone stamp. Some of the brick effects I've seen look pretty amazing, like hundred year old brick that's been shored up with plaster, etc.

Howdy Johnny, yes, it can be done, but it takes a lot of practice a cement plaster that is mostly lime or the wall sets too fast to stamp.😉

Love yer vids and watched alot for my job. Im a painter at a hotel that was asked to patch some stucco. Never done stucco. My boss thinks its as simple as patching drywall. So im tasked to handle it and im doing my best.
We bought a box of concrete surface refinisher but its very gummy. Its Rapidset. I can tell its not the same consistency as yer stucco. So what should i buy that i just add water to? Keep it simple please since i have no knowledge really.
I did most the job and am just not happy is all. So i redid the entire wall from corner to corner where able. But some parts had to have a patch dead center so had to blend. Our stucco is very smooth as if it were just drywall. No texture.
I was told to stucco the wall and paint it all in one day... So can you give me times that i should allow minimum. The walls were already painted so not sure i needed a scratch coat. I just put a half inch of mud on the wall after a bonding agent. let it dry a little then foam floated it then painted it in one day (as in 6 hours).
So can you tell me how long i should wait for each step of stucco, if i need two that is. And how long to paint before it is actually cured?

@Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas and New year back. I quit that job since. Poor company and management. I did the entire 6x5 foot wall with Rapid set already. Came out passable for what it was. But im sure you would laugh at it if you saw it.
They were happy however. It is a rustic old world Italian motif so I was able to get away with mistakes they thought were character. Amateur eyes helped me out a lot here. Lol

Good afternoon Tyco, your right Rapid set stucco patch is gluey, but the advantage is you can indeed paint after a couple of hours.
This product is not something can learn without help, try watching the video below. , FYI, rapid set stucco patch is just for patching holes, not skim coating walls, you would need to purchase a bag of finish coat, these sell in 94-pound bags, buy the finish cement plaster with the smallest sand grains to give a smooth finish. Howdy Tyco, different cement platers have different set times before painting.
Rapid Set stucco can usually be painted after about two hours, the fastest product that can be painted is Rapid set's cement all, in one hour, but dont use this product for stucco as it sets too fast.

I watch your videos obsessively because we are trying to figure out how to change the stucco on the exterior of our house. It is a textured blue stucco right now (not my taste) and we want the smoothest of the smooth stucco. We keep buying stucco or plaster (whats the difference?) that is too sandy and coarse. Can you advise us? We would be so grateful!

Hi Kathryn, I haven't seen sandblasting done in over 20 years, I thought there were codes against this method these days.
I would recomend Pressure washing with at least 3,000 psi, the idea is not only to remove all, loose paint, dust, grime and dirt but to actually etch the walls a tiny bit so that when you apply the bonding agent, your new finish will adhere indefinitely.
If it does not come off with 3,000 psi, It's probably not coming off, lastly after pressure washing I will sometimes take a scraper and remove any loose areas, as a day after pressure washing some paint areas will become loose again.

Thank you so much for the info! Your expertise is invaluable. Would we have to sandblast off the current coat of textured stucco? Could we just go on top of it? Where the textured stucco is falling off, there looks like there is a smooth white stucco undercoat. Would we have to remove both layers or is there a lazy-woman's way? Hello Kathryn Winslow, thanks for the kind words,
Easy question, Stucco is a term used for exteriors, Plaster is a term used for interiors technically speaking. Although even I used both words for the same thing.
If you want the smoothest exterior finish you should apply Santa Barbara smooth mission finish, or BMI's Marble finish either material you need two coats plus the necessary prep work, I will include a simple video below that shows it's application.
Most color coat materials manufacturers have three sizes of sand, fine, medium and coarse.
Both above finishes are the fine sand.

I'm trying to match a stucco texture. My construction texturing is less than good. https://imgur.com/UDNIVq3 The closest I've gotten is dashing or slapping on a mix real wet and cut with aggregate. But the original holds more and bigger aggregate, even though there are several layers of paint there.

I understand you must keep the scratch coat hydrated for 24-48 hours and the brown coat for 2 weeks, but, how many times a day should you spray it, and can you let it dry before applying the next coat, or must you keep it hydrated right up to applying the next coat?

Howdy Dean,
I hydrate a scratch coat once or twice depending on temperature, for the base coat hydrate at least three times during your cure/wait process.
I often ask my client to hydrate the walls, when they say how much, I respond with, start at the top with a regular garden hose, use the jet stream or close to it and hit the walls to where the water absorbs fully.
When the water finally just keep shedding off, the stucco is absorbed fully, thus this cause cement stucco to expand, then with the help of gravity and evaporation, your all set.

Anyway, they really messed up the stucco and now I can't have a license painter come over until we have this fixed. Is there anyway I could make it a little easier and Tru to fix it myself? Kirk, so glad I found your videos. Up till now, I've been soooo confused about stucco. However, I'vbe "almost" got a full understanding but I need some fine tuning from you. I plan to build a back yard fireplace with cinder block.. I later intend to trim it off with faux half bricks. But, after applying the wire trim on the corners/edges, do I just pretty much begin by applying a "scratch coat" directly on the moistened block? Also, I understand I let it cure for 48 hours, then apply a "brown coat" material and trowel it to desired look, let it cure for 28 days, then it's ready for paint? Is that all there is to it? Oh...last question...is "skim coat" and Scratch coat" the same thing, or is that a 3rd application. Thanks Kirk.

Excellent video, and I am installing new windows in my house. The house is built 1965 and it has a float finish. It is hard to tell whether it was color coat, or two coat with a green float. It looks really similar to the one at the bottom left of your board. I plan on painting the house when done, and was wondering if I did a two coat would the one at the left bottom be best suited for windows.

Howdy Tuckin, they are all suitable for paintings, you can find out if your home is color coated by wetting it, if it darkens like a brick does when wet, it's a color coat, if it does not darken when wet it's probably painted.

Hello 👋 I've started to do a stucco on a facial on a house which is 30' × 24" so it's my first time doing a stucco overhead. When mixing up a premix stucco does it have to be mixed thick or a little softer 😷👍

What float should be used to keep the most "grit" for texturing? I see the float that seems best is a wet (lots of water), rough sponge, rough and heavy float. The application is a horizontal foam trim piece, 3"-4" crack, and the stucco is very rough and trying to match when I float. For material I was planning to use Rapid Set stucco patch 16-20 grit.

Good evening Real Ox dude, that depends if it's on a whole house, the average time to allow the base coat to cure is at least two weeks in the summer and about 3 in the winter.
Plus one must hydrate the basecoat several times while allowing the basecoat to cure.
Hydrating stucco means, using a water hose to saturate the stucco with water until the basecoat of stucco absorbs no more.
If it just a small patch your repairing, buy, "Rapid Set Stucco" or "Rapid set Patch" from Home Depot or Lowes as well and any small hardware stores, these tow cement plasters are incredibly user friendly and need only 1 to 2 hours to set or cure, before a finish coat or for painting.

Now get out there and earn so dough.

Hey Kirk so I recently moved from good ole Oakland to North Las Vegas where all houses are stuccoed. I have a problem where when someone plumbed an exterior water tap, then put so much stucco on around the new tap to fill the gaps at the tap that it is noticeably raised 8" around the new outdoor water tap. What are my options also it looks like a Spanish Lace finish.

Looks like everone is getting there render on in the last couple of months going by the comments! Great to see you are still answering questions after nearly 8 years! I am in Australia and am looking at having a crack at my walls soon (starting an an inconspicuous spot first!). Is it common to always paint the finish, or can you get away with pigments in the finish coat? I will browse some of your other videos anyway and may find an answer there. I have watched 2 now and find your instuctional style to be easy to understand and follow.

Great Videos all. QUESTION! How do I get a journeyman stucco finisher to emulate the look of European exterior plaster over old stone walls. So all the old stone walls in southern Europe sometimes get plastered over which results in a very mounded type look, does this look a name or system here in California?

Thanks for the videos, homeowner, wood frame and stucco home an in Florida had 24 impact resistant windows and doors 2nd owners an built or c/o in 1990, with all hurricanes 🌀 and tropical storms an I never get to one side if my yard but had red ants set up camp an about puked over the cracks going down an slanted from the bottom sides of the windows an so nobody wants to come even look which is why I'm so doing it myself since they're not hurting for money $$! Lol or I would've paid them. Do I also use "special paint "for sealing the stucco, cracks ect before I go spending 🤔 too much bcuz I need to get it sealed and lockout moisture out in Florida and get it really well sealed, yes I bought 5 gal stucco paint says it seals, conditions the house.

I'd suggest cleaning the surface of your home, then priming it and painting.
For cracks, I would recommend Mor-Flexx caulking as it has sand in it that blends in with most finishes.

Howdy Kane, the red floats are used by bricklayers, not plasterers, as a rule, the green float leaves a much better finish.
If you want a course sand finish use a lot of water on the sponge and float the wall before it drys too much.

Don't worry about walls breathing, you should only worry about yourself breathing.
Acrylic Paint. The best exterior paint for stucco is 100% acrylic paint in most cases. Think of it as a rubber paint. 🥳

Hi im from the philippines and I've been watchin your vids,I use 1 is to 3 ratio of cement and sand, only use foam float as finishing.. which do you prefer as to finish so it would not have so much cracks on this video? thanks

Howdy Stephen my Philippino brother, correctamundo, however, when two coating with a hard steel trowel finish,
I tell folks more than likely you will get some hairlines, this is no big deal as quality paints flood these cracks.

The number 1 question to any contractor who impresses you, Are you going to be on the job working yourself or just turn the dogs loose?
If the contractor is not going to be on site, call another that will be.

I'm a DIYer homeowner and didn't know about the steel trowel finish resulting in hairline cracks. (or being more precise, didn't know the OTHER finishes DO NOT crack (!) ) I was putting 1 coat of bagged mortar mix on terra cotta block on my foundation and got those hairline cracks. I then thought I'd put some long fibers in the mortar and while yes, I got fuzz, NO cracks. In fact, with the fibers, I could feel the mud setting up faster. After that lesson, I don't think I'd ever do anything without fibers.

RE: Horse hair: This is in my interior lath and plaster. It is amazing how few fibers are used (same with the modern fibers, basically a pinch for a bag.) And then I wonder how or where horse hair was purchased.

Are 2 coats usually on houses? Scratch coat and what's the second one brown coat?

Also I read something somewhere about there being different kinds of stucco a synthetic and a natural harder one? I'm really new in this. How can I tell which one I need? Thank you. Great video.

Hi Aaron, ask for traditional stucco, they will apply one to two coats depending on who plasters your work. What matters is the fullness or thickness, it should be 7/8 or what is considered true and plumb with your walls. 👍

Morning AW, no this is not the product I used to repair my driveway.
The is premium Hanson's Lehigh cement plaster, for walls.
The product I would recommend for driveways that are user-friendly is Quikrete, sold at all Home Depot and Lowes stores.

Jus a friendly tip for ones that don't know what a plastering slicker is
A slicker is a piece of aluminum that's about 4 feet long 5 inches wide and is tapered and flexable. Its used as a straight edge for leveling the wall, etc,but when its held almost flat while leveling its called slicking. It may not be level, but its smooth and tight. The slicker is a great tool but takes time to master.

at home depot, "rapid set stucco" has heavy sand, "Green core USA," if you want fine sand.

Hey kirk...im new to this stucco concrete thing,but will be moving to florida from va where most of the homes are stucco and im trying to learn about this stuff in preparation for doing work to my home when i get it, so pardon my simple or dumb question. If i i scratch coat a wall or something how long does that have to dry before i can do my brown coat...and then my texture?...thanks man...love the informative videos,im learning alot. Its great having such a pro help out us diy homeowners...keep up the awesome videos!

Most scratch coats need 48 hour prior to the second coat, what happens if you wait a month? nothing, it's actually good for the wall as long as dust doesn't accumulate.
what happens if you apply the next day, nothing again, but it's best to wait until the stucco has had a chance to fully cure for strength purposes.
With new finish coats I allow the wall at least two weeks in summer and sometime up to 3 weeks in the winter, as these two coats have to cure properly, hydrate through this waiting period. (hose the walls down with water)
You want the base coat to fully cure as it will crack, it's supposed to, now when the third coat is applied hopefully the house has settled.
FYI, if the base coat stucco cracks so will the finish coat so cause the base coat to crack ahead your last and final coat.
