And I hear you call out my name
Listen my child you say to me
I am the voice of your history
Be not afraid, come follow me
Answer my call and Ill set you free
I am the voice in the wind and the pouring rain
I am the voice of your hunger and pain
I am the voice that always is calling you
I am the voice and I will remain
I am the voice in the fields when the summers gone
The dance of the leaves when the autumn winds blow
Never did I sleep throughout all the cold winter long
I am the force that in springtime will grow
I am the voice of the past that will always be
Filled with my sorrows and blood in my fields
I am the voice of the future
Bring me your peace, bring me your peace
And my wounds they will heal
Eimear Quinn’s song, The Voice, is a haunting and evocative piece that speaks to the power of history and the importance of confronting one’s own past in order to find healing and peace. The song begins with the singer hearing a voice on the wind, calling out her name. This voice tells her that it is the voice of her history and encourages her to follow it, promising that it will set her free. The chorus repeats the refrain that this voice is the voice of the singer’s hunger and pain, always calling out to her and always present.
What is particularly noteworthy about this song is the way in which it emphasizes the cyclical nature of history and the natural world. The singer notes that this voice is present not only in the wind and rain, but also in the fields throughout the seasons. It is a force that never sleeps, always growing and changing with the passing of time. And yet, despite the pain and sorrow that this voice is filled with, it still holds the promise of healing and peace. The singer implores this voice to bring her peace and promises that if it does, her wounds will heal.
Overall, The Voice is a powerful meditation on the relationship between the past, present, and future, and the ways in which confronting one’s own history can lead to growth and healing.
