Befindlichkeit translates to "state of mind" on ask. com translate. A slight change in translation alters the entire meaning of the piece. schichte translates to layers--the layers of the forgotten and silenced dead, the layers poured over by concrete waiting for the next layers of leichten--corpses--to bring the next layer of the "land" the country, the state, the state of mind. It's poetry. It has double meanings in German, very important to chose words carefully when doing translation or when reading translations have a skeptical outlook at what is presented by translators even if the artists themselves have put on their website, doesn't mean they can translate into English the meaning or that they want to expose the real meanings which a German-speaking person could more profoundly interpret because they understand the deeper meaning and the words in their own language and of their national mindset.

+the MEJ While lay of the land is one of the possible translations, "Befindlichkeit des Landes" does not just correlate to the georaphical and topological composition of a "land", but can also refer to the emotional composition of the people inhabiting a "country". The later usage is, at least in my experience the more common one.

Double meanings tripple meanings... and if you do drugs maybe even more. but it's aktually "leichen" which means corpses. thats important because there is also the word 'leichten' in german which means something like 'easy'. ;-)

Actually "lay" is an extremely simple translation to "befindlichkeit". In fact, it is impossible to translate it. I know this is the official translation in their website, before anyone starts flaming on me. I suggest that if you want to understand better these lyrics, google after "befindlichkeit heidegger".

I wouldn't say Germany is sad and hopeless. I am very grateful for all the honest melancholic music coming from here. The reason for that is complicated. Germany has been a melting pot for ideas, art, music, philosophy, politics etc. for a long time. It can feel very cold living here, yet there's a lot of movement and longing in the sub cultures. That's the best I can describe it.

Very simplified answer: Within 30 years everyone in Germany got hit by the most brutal war the world had seen so far, and each time it was of Germanies own accord. That kinda leaves a generational scar
