Leaders of the Free World
Elbow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm sick of working for a living
I'm just ticking off the days 'til I die
I miss you Louise
And the sickest little pleasures keep me going in between pulling teeth

Periscope up
I've been looking for a ladder
I need to see the Commander in Chief
And remind him what was passed onto me

Your mum don't sleep
The friends you keep
I didn't raise a thief

But the leaders of the free world
Are just little boys throwing stones
And it's easy to ignore 'til they're knocking on the door of your homes

My thinking isn't driven
But the music always gives me a lift
I'm so easy to please
But I think we dropped the baton like the 60's didn't happen. Oh no.

Periscope up
Should be looking for a ladder
I need to see the Commander in Chief
And remind him what was passed onto me

Your mum don't sleep
The friends you keep
I didn't raise a thief

Passing the gun from father to feckless son
We're climbing a landslide where only the good die young

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elbow's song "Leaders of the Free World" are a poignant commentary on the disillusionment and frustration with the current state of affairs in the world. The opening lines "I'm sick of working for a living, I'm just ticking off the days 'til I die" suggest a sense of hopelessness and resignation to a life of monotony and unfulfillment. The singer then goes on to express his longing for someone called Louise and the small pleasures that keep him going.

The chorus of the song is a scathing critique of the world's leaders, who are painted as immature and petty "little boys throwing stones". The singer laments the indifference of the people in power towards the suffering of those affected by their policies, saying "And it's easy to ignore 'til they're knocking on the door of your homes". The second verse of the song follows a similar theme, with the singer feeling a sense of disconnect from the world around him, and the feeling that society has regressed since the 1960s.

Overall, the lyrics of "Leaders of the Free World" paint a bleak picture of the state of the world and the lack of trust in those in power.

The song that got me REALLY into Elbow - back in 06, which wasnt a bad year for music to be fair. The World cup and the hot summer... Gorillaz, Kasabian, Primal Scream, even the Kooks were somewhat bearable when the sun was out! There was even some good dance music knocking about! lol. Glad Elbow won the mecury and mainstream success with seldom seen kid. They deserve it, Guy Garvey is an amazing writer.
