My Idea Of Fun
Electric Six Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My idea of fun is watching you come undone
Watching all of your allies begin to run
Flashbulbs begin to pop
As I bitchslap my way to the top
And you've no idea what's hitting you until it's nearly done

Game over
'(It's gonna be some time before it's your turn again)'
Game over
'(It won't be long before your time here comes to an end)'

My idea of a good time is you losing your mind
Watching all of the threads in your tapestries unwind
Riding the penthouse elevator
Applying the smackdown on all y'all haters
And leave you wondering how life could ever be so unkind

Game over
'(It's gonna be some time before it's your turn again)'
Game over
'(It won't be long before your time here comes to an end)'

Behold this chair where the victor sits
This game can make one lose his wits
And your confidence has been smashed to bits
And your only move is to call it quits and start over

'(Come on, come on, set up the board, let's play again)'
Game over
'(Come on, come one, this here amusement never ends)'
Game over
'(It's gonna be some time before it's your turn again)'

Game over
'(It won't be long before your time here comes to an end)'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Electric Six's song "My Idea Of Fun" describe the pleasure and enjoyment the singer finds in watching their opponent (possibly in a game or competition) lose to them. The use of violent and aggressive language like "bitchslap" and "smackdown" emphasizes the dominance the singer feels over their opponent. The pleasure the singer finds in this activity is conveyed through their description of watching their opponent come undone and lose their mind. The metaphor of tapestries unraveling emphasizes the chaos and ultimate failure that the opponent experiences. The flashbulbs popping and the mention of the penthouse elevator creates an image of a glamorous, high-stakes scene in which the singer revels.

The chorus of "Game over" and the repeated lines "(It's gonna be some time before it's your turn again)" and "(It won't be long before your time here comes to an end)" emphasize the power dynamic and the sense of ultimate defeat for the opponent. The final verse adds an additional layer to the metaphor of games and competition by describing the victor as sitting in a chair, indicating a sense of power and control. The mention of losing one's wits and being forced to start over emphasizes the mental exhaustion and futility of the game.

Overall, the lyrics of "My Idea Of Fun" portray a sense of sadistic pleasure in dominating an opponent and the ultimate sense of satisfaction in winning.

This song always seems to pop on whenever I mess up in a video game, and I love it.

Heard it for the first time a couple of days after a bad break up. </3 Great song but I wouldn't have been able to relate yet.

I would totally use this as a theme song...

instant classic? yeah right. i wish man. This amazing band was swept under the entertainment rug many years ago unfortunately....and no matter how many great albums they make they will never have commercial success again. Why? because time and time again the people have spoken: The mass majority like terrible, terrible music.

Jeremy Bennett

The 6 don't have a popular image to support the music...nearly middle aged rockers.....nothing the kids are into. In my book two of the most underrated band were Big Star and the 6.

Frank Hicks

Speaking as a robot-man. Hot dog they've done it again.

@daniel1982 You think I'm knocking the Six? I live by them. I listen to E6, eat and breathe: in that order! I'm simply saying that there are so many SHITTY artists out there getting filthy fucking rich off CRAP while an actual talented, hard working group like this are going around the country in a tiny van loading their own equipment. I've seen this. I've met Dick Valentine in a bathroom! Grateful for that but it would be nice to hear them on the radio and see their albums charting.
