The Spirit
Elision Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I always feel like I'm losing my sanity
All around me humans yet no humanity
Withered not by age but by hate
Come and see
First as tragedy then as farce
What will it take to learn from the past
Fallen out of one the two is drew
Never needing me and you
The third to hate lost in a quaternary fate
Oh I don't know what to mend what to leave behind in the end
Do I save the cabal? Or free them all
It's time we learnt that we're out of sight, we're out of mind
Forever lost and left behind
That's not a chip on my shoulder
It's your foot clamping down on my fucking neck
Out comes an evil that lives amongst us
It is not you or I, it is us, and it will be the last of us
All that is solid will melt into air
Where will you stand when all that's left is their despair
Come and see, soon enough every one of you will see that
They won't die for the Dow
At the end of the day, at the end of it all
Did we learn anything? Anything at all
This crisis is us, we're going out with a bang
We don't deserve a second chance, we deserve to hang

They bid me
Come and see us

Overall Meaning

The Spirit by Elision is a song about the state of humanity and the world we live in. The first two lines of the song, "I always feel like I'm losing my sanity, all around me humans yet no humanity," speak to the lack of compassion and empathy that seems to be prevalent in our society. The next line, "Withered not by age but by hate," highlights the destructive power of hate and the harm it can cause. The phrase "First as tragedy then as farce" references a quote by Karl Marx and suggests that we often repeat the same mistakes, only to make them worse the second time around.

The song then takes a turn towards the personal, with the lyrics "Fallen out of one the two is drew, never needing me and you." This could be interpreted as a reflection on failed relationships, with "one" representing the singer and the other person, and "two" representing the two of them falling out of love or connection. The following line, "The third to hate lost in a quaternary fate," is more difficult to decipher, but could potentially reference a situation where a third party played a role in the breakdown of the relationship.

The chorus of the song brings it back to broader societal issues, with the lines "It's time we learnt that we're out of sight, we're out of mind, forever lost and left behind." These lyrics point to the many people who are marginalized or forgotten by society, often due to factors outside of their control. The line "That's not a chip on my shoulder, it's your foot clamping down on my fucking neck" is a powerful statement about oppression and the systems that allow it to continue.

The song ends with a call to action, with the lyrics "This crisis is us, we're going out with a bang, we don't deserve a second chance, we deserve to hang." The singer seems to be suggesting that we need to take responsibility for the problems in our world and make change before it's too late.

Overall, The Spirit is a dark and powerful song that addresses important social and political issues. It calls for empathy, compassion, and action, while acknowledging the complexity of the world we live in.
