Watch It Break
Elizabeth Moen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why don't you love me?
I want to know, baby
Was is something I did, was it something I didn't
Was it something that I couldn't do for you?

Why don't you love me?
I gotta know, baby
Was it something I said
Was it something I didn't
Was it always on your mind?
Ain't nothing to do, nothing more to say
I'll leave you be, honey, but before I go
I just, I just, I just want to know

Why don't you love me?
I'm dying to know, listen to me
What could I give, what would it take?

My heart's in your hands and you're watching it
Watching it break

Overall Meaning

In Elizabeth Moen's song Watch It Break, the singer is trying to understand why their love interest doesn't reciprocate the same feelings. The lyrics "Why don't you love me? Was it something I did" suggest that the singer may be feeling guilty and wondering if they have done something wrong to push the other person away. They desperately want an answer and are willing to do anything to understand why the love they have is not being returned. The repetition of the question "why don't you love me?" emphasizes the despair and longing for an explanation.

The line "My heart's in your hands and you're watching it, Watching it break" paints a vivid image of the pain and vulnerability that comes with unrequited love. The singer realizes that the love they have given is not being cherished in return and it is breaking them apart. The use of the word 'watching' implies that the love interest is aware of the singer's feelings but chooses to ignore them. The sentiment of raw emotion and heartache is emphasized by the stripped-back production of the track.

Overall, Elizabeth Moen's Watch It Break portrays the feeling of being unable to come to terms with unrequited love and the internal struggle that comes with it.

John Ruane Analysis

Elizabeth Moen is a huge talent, who has a unique style all her own, and she's a great singer. What is really exciting about her is she isn't copying other singers, she has found her style and voice and I hope she sticks with it. It really is a breath of fresh air, considering a lot of Irish singers tend to copy other singers, how many Christy Moore copy cats do we have operating in Ireland at the moment, I can think of five of the top of my head. That said, we still have an incredibly amount of brilliant singers (especially women) singing in Ireland at the moment and dare I say you wouldn't think that if you listened to Irish radio stations. They still continue to only play 2% Irish artists/songs, oh but they have no problem availing of Irish listeners or Irish advertisers at all at all do they? Best of luck to this outstanding talented singer who I think will definitely make it, she has everything going for her.
