Betcha Nickel
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I betcha, a nickel,
I bet you I win.
I betcha, a nickel
That you will give in.

What's a matter honey?
'Fraid you'll lose?
Do what you wanna,
And say what you choose.

I still betcha, a nickel,
That you will be mine.
I betcha, a nickel,
Even raise it a dime.

I always win my money;
You can bet on that.
I always take a tip,
And keep it under my hat.

You've got yourself, to yourself.
Come on, get off that shelf.
You can fool some of the people, some of the time,
But you can't fool all the people, all of the time.

That's why I betcha, a nickel,
That you will be mine.
I betcha, you'll sign on, the dotted line.
I don't see no sense in wasting all this time,
'Cause whatever you bet, your bet is gonna be mine.

You've got yourself, to yourself.
Come on, get off that shelf.
You can fool some of the people, some of the time,
But you can't fool all the people, all of the time.

(we betcha, a penny, we ain't got a dime)
Say that ain't no money, you're wastin' my time.

I don't see no sense in all this rhythm, and rhyme.
'Cause whatever you bet, your bet is gonna be mine.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ella Fitzgerald and Her Famous Orchestra's song "Betcha Nickel" are about a confident and persuasive individual who is trying to win over their romantic interest. The individual is so sure of their ability to convince the other person to be with them, that they are willing to bet on it - "I betcha, a nickel, That you will give in." The other person seems hesitant, perhaps because they are afraid of losing the bet or getting their heart broken. However, the confident individual persists, reminding them that they can't fool all of the people all of the time and that they might as well give in because they'll end up with them eventually anyway.

The use of money in the lyrics is a metaphor for the pursuit of love and the willingness to take risks to achieve it. The individual is willing to put their money where their mouth is and bet on their ability to win over the other person. The lyrics also play on the idea of time and wasting it, suggesting that the other person is wasting their time resisting their advances.

Overall, the lyrics to "Betcha Nickel" are a playful and confident expression of a desire for love and the determination to succeed in achieving it.

How I love Ella!! From the 50's when Mum would play 78's on our gramaphone..and I first heard A Tisket -A Tasket!! A smooth warm. wonderful voice that included you in her happiness at singing!! I saw Ella when she came to Australia..in the 70-s or 80"s (??). 2nd row seats!! Ella sang a medley with A-Ticket-A-Tasket in it. I called out my delight at hearing her sing this song..Live!! Ella look straight at me and said ..""That's all you"'re getting, honey"'!! I was in 7th Heaven!! We were blessed by Ella's incredible talent!!
