I'm Gonna Go Fishin'
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woke up this morning wanting to cry
Then I remember, yes, I know why
She's a real good one for having her cake
I'm gonna go fishing or jump in the lake

Yeah, I'm gonna go fishing, that's what I'll do
Think about nothing, not even you
Catch a real big one, a big speckled trout
Snapping in the water, I'll pull him on out

Sweet talking liar, spin me a yarn
Tell me a story, big as a barn
Don't stop listening, I won't hear you out
I'm gonna go fishing and catch me a trout

If a gal is a liar, a gal is a fool
Playing for keepers and breaking the rules
She'll be the loser, yet to find out
I'm gonna go fishing and catch me a trout

Here in the water, look at him shine
There goes a big one, that one is mine
Catch up the reel now, I've got the feel now
Hooked onto my fly rod, I've got me a trout

Sweet talking liar, you're in for a fall
You tell me a story, you cut to the wall
Don't go my way, I'm down the highway
I'm gonna go fishing

Yes, I'm gonna go fishing
Yes, I'm gonna go fishing and get me some trout

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" by Ella Fitzgerald sets the tone for the entire song, with the singer wanting to cry, only then remembering why. Presumably, she was in a relationship with someone who wasn't treating her well or was being dishonest, as the next line tells us "She's a real good one for having her cake." This phrase means that the person she was involved with was selfish, wanting to have everything her way, without any compromise or sacrifice. The singer is feeling hurt and betrayed by this person, which is why she says "I'm gonna go fishing or jump in the lake." She realizes that she needs to do something to get her mind off this person, and fishing seems like the perfect escape for her.

In the next verse, the singer makes it clear that she wants to forget about this person completely. She wants to "think about nothing, not even you." The act of catching a big fish, a big speckled trout specifically, would give her a sense of accomplishment and lift her spirits. The chorus repeats the phrase "I'm gonna go fishing" twice before describing the act of catching the fish. The singer enjoys the rush she gets from catching a fish, feeling the "snap" of the trout in the water as she pulls it in.

In the final verse, the singer addresses the "sweet talking liar" she was involved with, calling her out for her dishonesty. She's figured out that this person was playing games with her, "playing for keepers and breaking the rules." The singer knows she'll come out on top and be the "winner" in the end. She declares that she's going to go fishing and catch a trout, leaving this person behind.

Overall, "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" is a song about taking control of one's life and finding solace in doing something you love. Rather than wallowing in self-pity and allowing someone to control her emotions, the singer chooses to go fishing and find happiness on her own terms.

I'm somebody out here who thoroughly enjoys this!  A song written by Duke Ellington and Peggy Lee, arranged by Nelson Riddle and sung by Ella?!?!  It doesn't get better!  Thanks for posting and educating the masses!

The lyrics make a little more sense if you know that it was Duke Ellington's theme for the hit movie "Anatomy of a Murder." Jimmy Stewart plays a defense attorney on Michigan's Upper Peninsula who spends his free time fishing. Peggy Lee added the lyrics later, but Ella sang it first. Peggy later recorded it and the tempo is much faster, which I think works better than Riddle's lush arrangement.
