I Cried and Cried and Cried
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember other days how I used to weep
Over things you said to me; I couldn't even sleep
You forgot your promises, every single vow
All you did was laugh at me, but things are different now

I cried for you; now it's your turn to cry over me
Every road has a turning
That's one thing you're learning
I cried for you; what a fool I used to be
Now I found two eyes just a little bit bluer
I found a heart just a little bit truer
I cried for you; now it's your turn to cry over me

How can I forget the hours that I worried through
Wondering the live long day just what next thing to do?
In those days you never thought anything of me
But the slave that was all yours and now at last is free

I cried for you; now it's your turn to cry over me
Every road has a turning
That's one thing you're learning
I cried for you; what a fool I used to be
Now I found two eyes just a little bit bluer

I found a heart just a little bit truer
I cried for you; now it's your turn to cry over me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I Cried for You" by Ella Fitzgerald are those of a scorned lover who's finally moved on from the hurt caused by a former partner. The singer reminisces about how she used to weep over the things her ex said to her, noting that he forgot his promises and every single vow that he made. In the past, all he did was laugh at her pain. However, now the singer seems to have won, as her ex-partner is experiencing the same pain she went through. The singer's tone is that of someone who's overcompensating for the pain she once felt, highlighting the fact that she's found someone better.

The chorus reveals the main theme of the song – the idea that every road has a turning. The singer states that she's cried for her ex, but now it's his turn to cry over her. She's found someone new who's a better fit than the previous partner. The singer notes that she's no longer the slave of her old lover, but free at last. The overall mood of the song is upbeat, with a sense of triumph over heartbreak.

The wonderful Ella..........this version is so much more lyrical and heartfelt than the faster Billie Holliday rendition. Fabulous!

Impossible to dislike this. Even if you're not a fan of the genre, you should at least appreciate the tone and passion in her voice.

Sarah Vaughan can sing this well, but man, ella is always the best.. She was a league ahead of all the brilliant singers of that era. Sinatra and Holliday may sing with feeling, Sarah may have the huge vocal range. But Ella is the only one with the range and the feeling. So brilliant.
