Jail House Blues
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lord, this house is goin' to get raided, yes, sir

Thirty days in jail with my back turned to the wall, turned to the wall
Thirty days in jail with my back turned to the wall
Look here, Mr. Jail-keeper, put another gal in my stall

I don't mind bein' in jail, but I got to stay there so long, so long
I don't mind bein' in jail, but I got to stay there so long, so long
When every friend I have is done shook hands and gone

You better stop your man from tickling me under my chin, under my chin
You better stop your man from tickling me under my chin
'Cause if he keeps on tickling, I'm sure gonna take him on in

Good morning, blues, blues, how do you do? How do you do?

Good morning, blues, blues, how do you do?
Say, I just come here to have a few words with you

Overall Meaning

Ella Fitzgerald's "Jail House Blues" tells the story of a woman's experience being incarcerated. The song opens with a premonition of an impending raid that will undoubtedly lead to her arrest. She then proceeds to describe her confinement, with her back continuously turned towards the wall, suggesting a sense of isolation and solitary confinement. She requests for the jail-keeper to put another woman in her cell, hinting at the loneliness of being locked up.

As the song progresses, she expresses that she does not mind being in jail, but she has to stay there for so long. This statement portrays a level of resignation to her condition. She then laments the fact that all her friends have abandoned her and moved on with their lives, leaving her alone to suffer the consequences of her actions.

In the final verse, she warns the jail-keeper to stop his man from tickling her, suggesting that even in jail, women are subjected to unwanted advances from men. The song ends with a bittersweet good morning to the blues, suggesting a possible sense of hopelessness, sadness, and resignation.

Un des joyaux du blues ! Wild Bil Davis & Roy Elridge vous foutent des frissons et la grande Ella n'a jamais aussi bien chanté!

I've been a blues aficionado easily for 50 years, and can't believe it took that long to discover this album. Working and listening to Spotify, I just heard See See Rider off of The Best of Eric Burdon & The Animals and happened to look up the history of that song on Wikipedia, where I came across this album by Ella. I had to give up my Hammond CV when we moved from Oregon to TN last year, and just picked up a Yamaha YPG-235 to get back to playing, so I can't wait to get home and start working out with Wild Bill.

When I first fell in love with 'the blues' back in 1988, this song was my first introduction to this genre. So beautiful and magical.
