Like Young
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm out doin' the usual places
And I'm livin' it, like young
Then I dig me this face of all faces
He's the craziest, like young

He drinks coffee at Cafe Espresso
He reads Kerouac, like young
He goes where all the angry young men go
Recites poetry, like young

We start blowin' the pad around lovin'
And we're homin' it, like now
We spin records on cloud number seven
And he's reachin' me, like wow

I'm all unstrung 'cause, man
He's got me feelin' like young
If he were to brush me and go
I'm starting to wear my hair again
Like a square again

I keep gettin' the kookiest notion
I think maybe it's like love
I've been feelin' a crazy emotion
I think, baby, it's like love

Now we're ridin' a rainbow to Cloudsville
And we're makin' it like young
Love soft as April snow
Love warm as candle glow
Love, love is easy to go

I'm all unstrung 'cause, man
He's got me feelin' like young
Without him I'm no good at all
Without him I'm less than a decimal
?

I keep gettin' the kookiest notion
I think maybe it's like love
I've been feelin' a crazy emotion
I think, baby, it's like love

Now we're ridin' a rainbow to Cloudsville or Wowsville
We're makin' it, makin' it like, like, like young

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ella Fitzgerald’s song Like Young capture the feeling of being carefree and in love. The song opens with the singer living in the moment, going to all the usual places and enjoying life. She then meets a man who she describes as “the craziest, like young”. This man embodies the spirit of the Beat Generation, drinking coffee at Cafe Espresso, reading Kerouac, and reciting poetry.

As the song progresses, the two fall in love and begin “blowin’ the pad around lovin'” and “spin[ning] records on cloud number seven”. The singer expresses that she feels unstrung because the man has her feeling “like young”. She has a desire to keep this feeling of youth and newfound love, as she mentions wanting to keep her hair “like a square again”.

The song ends with the two “ridin' a rainbow to Cloudsville” and experiencing love that is “easy to go”. The lyrics convey the excitement and energy of new love, as well as a desire to maintain that feeling of youth and freedom.

that version is like, the bomb!

Kerouac Fan

Beautiful voice. Ella looks great. Imagine being back there in 1959 when this was probably shot. Interesting song too. Kerouac's mentioned in it at a time when he still had books to write and now the movie of his classic On the Road is to be premiered in Cannes this month (May 2012). Ella singing "I've Got the World on a Sting" is on the film's soundtrack. Full circle.

Kerouac Fan Love your comment! You know! Dig how happy Herb and the other musicians look. They all loved playing for Ella and Sass because those ladies swung hard and had great voices!

Desperate Times

Kerouac Fan I was on the scene in 1959. Saw my first live Ella concert 1959. Saw and heard her Caesar's with Sinatra & Basie, Santa Monica concert, numerous times after. Remember the Memorex commercials when she sang and broke the glass?

Oh baby, Mama Ella. Never had clue there were lyrics to this one! God bless ya Ella.

Actually, it's from Playboy's Penthouse, the forerunner of Playboy After Dark and one of the first, if not THE first, TV show to feature integrated social gatherings. Some of Hefner's centerfold models can be seen in the background.

Lyrics by Paul Francis Webster, one of the alltime great lyricists, winner of three Academy Awards for Best Song and father of photographer Guy Webster who shot the cover of the first Doors album among many others. As a kind of satire on hipness its just too cool for words.
