T'Aint Nobody's Bizness
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There ain't nothing I can do
Or nothing I can say
That folks don't criticize me

But I'm going to do
Just as I want to anyway
And don't care just what people say
If I should take a notion
To jump into the ocean
Ain't nobody's business if I do

If I go to church on Sunday
Then cabaret all day Monday
Ain't nobody's business if I do

If my man ain't got no money
And I say "Take all of mine, honey"
Ain't nobody's business if I do

If I give him my last nickel
And it leaves me in a pickle
Ain't nobody's business if I do

Well, I'd rather my man would hit me
Than follow him to jump up and quit me
Ain't nobody's business if I do

I swear, I won't call no copper
If I'm beat up by my papa
Ain't nobody's business if I do

Nobody's business

Ain't nobody's business
Nobody's business if I do

Overall Meaning

The song "Tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do," famously performed by jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald, is a defiant declaration of individual autonomy and a rejection of societal expectations. The opening lyrics acknowledge the inevitability of criticism, explaining that no matter what one does or says, someone will find fault with it. However, the singer asserts her right to live her life as she sees fit and to disregard the opinions of others. This sentiment is reinforced in the repeated refrain, which emphasizes that her actions and decisions are nobody's business but her own.

The lyrics give specific examples of situations in which the singer might face judgment or interference from others, such as jumping into the ocean, going to church on Sunday and a cabaret on Monday, or offering money to a man who has none. In each case, the singer asserts her right to make her own choices and handle the consequences without interference from others. The final verse about being beaten by her father and refusing to involve the police highlights the theme of personal autonomy taken to an extreme, where the singer would rather endure abuse than have others interfere in her life.
