These Foolish Things
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh! Will you never let me be?
Oh! Will you never set me free?
The ties that bound us
Are still around us
There's no escape that I can see
And still those little things remain
That bring me happiness or pain
A cigarette that bears a lipstick's traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words that told you what my heart meant
A fair ground's painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you
You came you saw you conquer'd me
When you did that to me
I knew somehow this had to be
The winds of March that make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings but who's to answer?
Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you

First daffodils and long excited cables
And candle lights on little corner tables
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
The park at evening when the bell has sounded
The "Ile de France" with all the gulls around it
The beauty that is Spring's
These foolish things remind me of you
How strange how sweet to find you still
These things are dear to me
They seem to bring you near to me
The sigh of midnight trains in empty stations
Silk stockings thrown aside dance invitations
Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you

Gardenia perfume ling'ring on a pillow
Wild strawb'ries only seven francs a kilo
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
The smile of Garbo and the scent of roses
The waiters whistling as the last bar closes
The song that Crosby sings
These foolish things remind me of you
How strange how sweet to find you still
These things are dear to me
They seem to bring you near to me
The scent of smould'ring leaves, the wail of steamers
Two lovers on the street who walk like dreamers

Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you

Overall Meaning

The song "These Foolish Things" by Ella Fitzgerald is a nostalgic tribute to a lost love. The lyrics lament the inability of the singer to escape the reminders of a relationship that has ended, such as the traces of lipstick on a cigarette, an airline ticket to romantic places, and the sound of a tinkling piano in the next apartment. Despite the pain these reminders bring, they also bring back fond memories, such as the winds of March that make the singer's heart dance, the beauty of spring, and the lingering scent of gardenia perfume on a pillow.

The use of specific details to evoke emotions is a hallmark of this song. The little things that remain - the daffodils, the cables, the candle lights, the park at evening, and the silk stockings - are all vivid images that help to illustrate the singer's feelings. The lyric "How strange how sweet to find you still" acknowledges the bittersweet nature of the memories and the complicated emotions that come with them. The use of the phrase "These foolish things" is a self-aware recognition of the irrational attachment that the singer still feels for their lost love.

Overall, "These Foolish Things" is a poignant portrayal of the lingering emotions that accompany the end of a relationship. The lyrics are carefully crafted to evoke specific memories and emotions that will resonate with anyone who has experienced heartbreak.

I remember a phrase from a PBS retrospective "It will never be that good again.  It's not available."  Pavarotti and Fitzgerald.  These were the greatest most important singers of the last century.

So many great singers...  Callas, Domingo, Miklosa, Carpenter (don't laugh, that was a perfect instrument) ,,,  But above all Fitzgerald.

She bridged the generations.  Literally.  Informing still how songs continue to be interpreted.

We may have entered a period of mostly non-singers, where auto tune can fix anything so skill is less-required or exaggerated into the super-human.

This song is not a throw-back, these songs, this period of song writing is still so brilliant that it continues to be and inspire and may for as long as memory and technology can replicate and keep alive.

Would that we could all live to see someone as great.  Maybe one of today's great singers will be able to find a completely universal appeal while interpreting songs as inventively and effortlessly inventively as Ella Fitzgerald.

I am 76 and I agree wholeheartedly that listening to Ella has been the joy of my life. My mother adored her and played her recordings a lot. I would say to her, these wonderful things remind me of you. 🎶 Keep singing for the angels, lady!

She sings all 3 verses here, never heard another version where she did this. Exquisite, the way she can colour every word, and a seamless legato to die for. There will never be another Ella. Thank you for sharing this gem.
