What Will I Tell My Heart
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm trying to explain to friends, dear
The reasons we two are apart
I know what to tell our friends, dear
But what can I tell my heart?

It's easy to say to strangers
That we played the game from the start
It's easy to lie to strangers
But what will I tell my heart?

When I smile to hide all the tears inside
What an ache it will be bring
Then I'll wander home to a telephone
That forgot how to ring, ring, ring

I'm telling you'll soon be back, dear
To fool the whole town may be smart
I'll tell them you'll soon be back, dear
But what will I tell my heart?

I could say that you'll soon be back, dear
To fool the whole town may be smart

I'll tell them you'll soon be back, dear
But what will I tell my heart?

Overall Meaning

The song "What Will I Tell My Heart" by Ella Fitzgerald is a classic heartbreak ballad from the perspective of someone who is trying to come to terms with a broken relationship. The singer is struggling to explain to their friends and ultimately to themselves why they and their partner have separated. They acknowledge that it is easy to put on a brave face and lie to others about what is going on, but it is much harder to confront their own emotions and figure out what to do next.

The singer is torn between wanting to believe that their partner will come back to them, and the reality that they may not. They know that they must face the difficult truth that the relationship may not work out, but they cannot bear the thought of giving up hope. The chorus is particularly poignant in this regard, as the singer asks "what will I tell my heart?" - implying that their own emotions are the hardest thing to deal with.

The lyrics also touch on the idea of putting up a front and hiding one's true feelings. The singer talks about how they smile to hide their tears and act as though everything is okay, even though they are hurting inside. This is a common theme in many songs about heartbreak, as it speaks to the idea that it can be hard to let go of someone and move on.

Overall, "What Will I Tell My Heart" is a beautifully written and performed song that captures the pain and confusion of a difficult breakup. Ella Fitzgerald's vocals are haunting and powerful, making this a must-listen for anyone who has ever gone through heartbreak.

Sublime!

There's one real problem with this song, that it's not much use listening to anything else afterwards.

Oh, I've had this cd for years...

If you've managed to be resuscitated, amigo, just don't listen to the other fourteen songs on this album : you certainly won't survive this time.

Your comment, like this song, killed me.

Vanessa Williams has a wonderful rendition of this tune. I think she was influenced by a Dinah Washington version. Ella of course sounds magnificent as usual.

Thank you...Thank you...Thank you for sharing this. I am more familiar with the Vanessa W. cover of this song. I had no idea that The Great Ella song it first. Although Vanessa's cover is good, you can really feel the sadness of Ella's version when she says "What will I tell my heart." Thanks again  :-)
