And love to wander
It's just the Gypsy in my soul
There's something calling me
From way out yonder
It's just the Gypsy in my soul
I'm only content havin' my way
There is no other life
Of which I'm fonder
It's just the Gypsy in my soul
No cares
No strings
My heart has wings
If I am fancy free
And I love to wander
It's just the Gypsy in my soul
I've got to give vent to my emotions
I'm only content havin' my way
There is no other life
Of which I'm fonder
It's just the Gypsy in my soul
No cares
No strings
My heart has wings
If I am fancy free
And love to wander
It's just the Gypsy in my soul
It's just the Gypsy in my soul
Just the Gypsy in my soul
The song "The Gypsy in my Soul" performed by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong captures the essence of a bundle of emotions and the yearning to be free, inspired by the wanderlust nature of the Gypsy life. The first two lines of the lyrics "If I am fancy free" seem to indicate that the singer is someone who doesn't want to be tied down to any routine or set of expectations. They aren't content with the idea of living a predictable life, spinning on the same axis day in and day out. The second line "And love to wander" shows a desire to travel and experience the world in all its colors and textures.
The "Gypsy in my soul" is a metaphor for the wildness and restlessness that drives some people to embrace the traveler's life. The next few lines "There's something calling me, from way out yonder," convey the idea that there is an unseen force or energy that is beckoning the singer to move forward and explore the unknown. They feel restless and imprisoned by the constraints of their current life, and this inner voice is urging them to break free and embark on a new journey.
The chorus "I've got to give vent to my emotions, I'm only content havin' my way" further reinforces the idea that the singer needs to be in control of their own life. They want to express themselves fully and live in a way that feels true to their own desires. They have no desire to be held back by anyone or anything and are happy to be free of cares and strings. The final line "It's just the Gypsy in my soul" brings everything full circle, reminding us that this is simply who the singer is, beyond any external circumstances or particular moments of their life.

My mother passed away Christmas 2018. She wasn't always in life and lived a "Gypsy" lifestyle, but I loved my mother to death. She is the only reason I have any musical talent. This April 6 is her birthday and I will be singing and playing this song in memory of her.
