What a wonderful world
Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see trees of green
Red roses too
I see them bloom
For me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

I see skies of blue
And clouds of white
The bright blessed day
The dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces
Of people going by
I see friends shaking hands
Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying
I love you

I hear babies cry
I watch them grow
They'll learn much more
Than I'll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself

What a wonderful world
Ooh, yes

Overall Meaning

Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's song, "What a Wonderful World," is a timeless masterpiece that conveys a message of appreciation and gratitude for the beauty that surrounds us. The lyrics describe the magnificence of the world we live in, from the trees of green to the red roses that bloom. The song showcases the wonder that one can find in both the light and dark aspects of life, from the colors of the rainbow to the dark sacred night. As Armstrong and Fitzgerald sing, their message is clear: despite social and political turmoil, the world remains a wondrous and life-affirming place.

The lyrics follow a distinct progression that climaxes in the final verse. The opening and second verse describe the physical beauty of the world, making references to trees, red roses, skies, and clouds - all elements that represent the natural beauty of the world. The third verse moves away from the physical beauty of the world to the beauty that resides in human connection. Armstrong and Fitzgerald describe the joy of seeing friends shaking hands, saying "how do you do," and expressing affection to one another. The final verse brings the song to a crescendo, with Fitzgerald singing about the wonder and joy of seeing babies cry and grow. Here, the song reaches its emotional apex, with Armstrong and Fitzgerald cooing as they sing, "What a wonderful world!"

In conclusion, "What a Wonderful World" is more than just a catchy tune; it is a profound and hopeful message to humanity. The song encourages us to appreciate the beauty around us, in both nature and in one another. Louis Armstrong is born in 1901, abandonned by his father and with her mother forced to sell her body for a living. He's been raised by his grand-mother who was born as a slave. Yet no one reminded us in a better way that we live in a wonderful world. Thinking about it helps to put things in perspective.
