Baby Britain
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Baby Britain feels the best
Floating over a sea of vodka
Separated from the rest
Fights problems with bigger problems

Sees the ocean fall and rise
Counts the waves that somehow didn't hit her
Water pouring from her eyes
Alcoholic and very bitter
For someone half as smart
You'd be a work of art
You put yourself apart
And I can't help until you start

We knocked another couple back
The dead soldiers lined up on the table
Still prepared for an attack
They didn't know they'd been disabled

Felt a wave a rush of blood
You won't be happy 'til the bottle's broken
And you're out swimming in the flood
You kept back you kept unspoken

For someone half as smart
You'd be a work of art
You put yourself apart
And I can't help until you start

You got a look in your eye
When you're saying goodbye
Like you want to say hi

The light was on but it was dim
Revolver's been turned over
And now it's ready once again
The radio was playing "crimson and clover"

London bridge is safe and sound
No matter what you keep repeating
Nothing's gonna drag me down
To a death that's not worth cheating

For someone half as smart
You'd be a work of art
You put yourself apart
And I can't help until you start

For someone half as smart
You'd be a work of art
You put yourself apart
And I can't help until you start

"Baby Britain feels the best
Floating over a sea of vodka
Separated from the rest
Fights problems with bigger problems
Sees the ocean fall and rise
Counts the waves that somehow didn't hit her
Water pouring from her eyes
Alcohol again, very bitter

For someone half as smart, you'd be a work of art
You put yourself apart
And I can't help until you start"...

I know Elliott was a huge Beatles fan and in my opinion this is the closest he ever got to sounding like them. And this is a hell of a good job

@Evan Phillips now that's delusional. He played better guitar and piano than them by Miles it's no question. His songwriting far surpassed anything Lenin wrote (probably the best lyricist in the band) the only thing the Beatles have going for them is that they had more vocal range. When 1 person has the same and even more talent than a entire group of 4, it's clear whose the most talented. You are just too knocked up on nostalgia or your love for the Beatles clouds your judgement on reality.. or your those snobs who believe sales and "impact" determine whats best instead of the actual quality of the you know.. MUSIC!

Evan Phillips

@Trenzalore0801 : really? I love Elliott but that’s bollocks mate McCartney can play numerous instruments as well as Harrison and Lennon, Elliott couldn’t play guitar as good as Harrison or piano as good as McCartney

Susie Watkins

Have you never heard his rendition of "Because?"

John Rosborough

Absolutely

Patrick H

even references Revolver in the lyrics, if I'm not mistaken

Everytime that I try to get someone into Elliott, they always say that his music is sad or even depressing. Fuck, that people don't even know how happy this music makes us the fans feel. After a tough day, I can listen to his music and relate my problems to his, and feel that I'm not alone on this cruel nonsense world where the most sensitive ones get pissed off constantly. The relief I feel with his tunes is almost insane. Like experiencing the nirvana.

Elliot smith is so nice and soothing. Some of his music r perfect on a bad day others lift soul on a good day. How do people not feel similar?
