Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Eloy Lyrics

Move where the rivers flow, fly with the breezes forever
And the earth and the sea and the hills and the trees they're a part me
All life, all life, is one, is one
Bathe in the mountain streams run through green meadows and valleys below
And the earth and the sea and the hills and the trees they're a part of me
All life, all life, is one, is one
What moves the hands on the clock on the wall?
As the pendulum swings, so it drives the machines
Nature's force is the source, she's the source of us all, oh
I feel this new found force driving the words from my pen
Here, as I compose my thoughts firing my heart
As as my heart drives the blood
Throught my veins, warmth, feel it baptise my soul
All in rhyme, a verbal procession
All in rhyme, a lyric obsession
There's a force in us all
There's a force drives the blood in my veins
And this force speaks in poetry
The lyrics to Eloy's song "All Life Is One" speak of a deep connection to nature and the universe as a whole. The singer feels a part of all aspects of nature, from the sun and the sky above to the hills and trees on Earth. The idea is that all life is interconnected and part of a greater whole.
The lyrics also explore the power of nature and its ability to create and sustain life. The singer questions what drives the hands of a clock or what causes rain and snow to fall. The answer, according to the singer, is the force of nature - the same force that drives the blood in our veins and inspires us to speak in poetry. This force is celebrated throughout the song as something beautiful and powerful.
The final verses speak to the creative process and the sense of inspiration that comes from feeling connected to nature. The singer feels the force speaking through them, driving the words from their pen and firing their heart. This force is felt as warmth, baptizing their soul. Overall, the lyrics express a reverence for nature and a belief in the interconnectedness of all life.
