Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

A paradise of comforting peace.
Sound and clear, a gentle touching atmosphere.
An open air, serene and refreshing;
And nature pure as it was created.
Sound and clear, a gentle touching atmoshpere.
Sedative ringing sounds surprise the sole intruding man.
He, who's used to the noise of lies,
The sacrifice of brother's hand, deceit with dubious plans.
A world that has gone to extremes and has failed.
People surround me, peacefully, I can tell.
I see in wonder, how our links and bonds fit well.
Their voices sing colourful and true;
An honesty I have never used.
Ambiguity never does appear;
And barriers of speech are not feared.
Harmonious singing - celestial bells I hear.
From all these people I have nothing to fear.
Their voices sing colourful and true;
An honesty I have never used.
Ambiguity never does appear;
And barriers of speech are not feared.
Sedative ringing sounds surprise the sole intruding man.
He, who's used to the noise of lies,
And often changing stands;
The sacrifice of brother's hand, deceit with dubious plans.
A world that has gone to extremes and has failed.
The lyrics of Eloy's song Behind The Walls Of Imagination represent a vivid depiction of a peaceful and harmonious garden that exists within the mind's eye. The garden is described as a paradise of comforting peace, with a gentle touching atmosphere that is serene and refreshing. The imagery suggests that the garden is pure and untouched, created by nature in its purest form. The sedative ringing sounds in the garden come as a surprise to the sole intruding man who is accustomed to the chaotic noise of lies and changing stands. This may indicate that the song is an allegory towards the modern era where people have lost their way, they have lost touch with nature, and are consumed by materialism and the illusion of money and fame.
Furthermore, the lyrics appear to be a reflection on the human condition, where people seek honesty but are often confronted with ambiguity and fears, barriers in speech and communication, and deceitful plans. The song represents the struggle of man, as he tries to find his place in the world, to connect with nature and form a bond with others. The serene and refreshing atmosphere in the garden represents peace, harmony, and hope that the world can have it all, given the right focus and intention.
