Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Words and sounds that echo in the night
It's like an animal,
It's aboriginal
So unemotional
It's takin over all your senses
Don't be afraid you must obey
The tug of the call of the wild
Feeling the call of the wild
Open the door of the cage
That's been holding you prisoner
And living a lie
And silence follows your cry
Pungent is the danger in the air
Vibrant notions reach from everywhere
It seems so natural
So very physical
A little virginal
At last you're tearing down all fences
Don't be afraid you must obey
The tug of the call of the wild
Deep down you know how to enjoy
Feeling the call of the wild
Don't hesitate no chance to escape
Follow the call of the wild
It's something that you can't deny
It's ruling all of your senses
Deep down you know how to enjoy
Feeling the call of the wild
Not that you're sharing
The cradle of wisdom
And daring to reach for the skies
A silence follows your cry
It's like an animal,
It's aboriginal
So unemotional
It's takin over all your senses
Don't be afraid you must obey
The tug of the call of the wild
Deep down you know how to enjoy
Feeling the call of the wild
Don't hesitate no chance to escape
Follow the call of the wild
Deep down you know how to enjoy
Feeling the call of the wild
It's something that you can't deny
It's ruling all of your senses
The lyrics of Eloy's song Call of the Wild appear to be about the awakening of primal instincts and the urge to embrace a more natural way of living. The words and sounds that awaken deep inside seem to evoke a sense of being in touch with the wild, something that is aboriginal and unemotional, yet physical and vibrant. This sense of being connected to a primal nature seems to be taking over one's senses, and the singer urges the listener to follow this call of the wild, to embrace it fully and let go of any fears or hesitations.
The metaphor of a cage that has been holding one prisoner is used, indicating that the call of the wild represents a freedom from the constraints of modern society, and invites one to break free from this confinement and embrace a more natural and free way of living. The notion of danger in the air is also present, indicating that the call of the wild comes with risks, but ultimately, it is worth it. The lyrics suggest that by answering this call, one can access wisdom and reach for the skies, implying that embracing one's wild nature can lead to personal growth and enlightenment.
