Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Carried by Cosmic Winds
Eloy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
like a grain of sand
it seems as though some higher force did me from the first
But finally I feel like a part of some larger plan
I'm a piece of this puzzle that's called the universe
I still sense in urgency
to journey further on
a start and not an end
things I'll see and can't explain will prove right or wrong
and things I can't articulate
may well turn up again
cosmic winds act as wings
carry high - eternal rise
cosmic winds act as wings
carry high - eternal rise
cosmic winds
he who contains the light will see
he who resists the queen will breathe
he who asks will finally be answered
he who rests will be deceived
The lyrics to Eloy's song, Carried by Cosmic Winds, can be interpreted as the singer's realization of their place in the universe. They feel as though something greater than themselves has been guiding them from the beginning, and now they finally feel like they are part of a larger plan. The singer continues to feel an urgency to keep going on this journey, with a sense that they have only found a start and not an end. They are willing to accept that there will be things they cannot explain or articulate, but they are still determined to keep moving forward with the help of these cosmic winds.
The repetition of "cosmic winds act as wings, carry high - eternal rise" reinforces the idea that these winds are helping the singer on their journey, even to new heights beyond their current understanding. The four lines at the end seem to be a warning or a call to action for the listener. "He who contains the light will see" suggests that those who have knowledge and understanding will be able to see the truth. "He who resists the queen will breathe" may be a reference to rebellion against a higher power or authority, and the punishment that may come with it. "He who asks will finally be answered" encourages the listener to seek answers to their questions, while "he who rests will be deceived" warns them against becoming complacent or content with what they already know.
Overall, the song's lyrics suggest a sense of wonder and awe at the vastness of the universe, and a determination to keep exploring and discovering more about it.
