Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Eloy Lyrics

And let us touch this history
Stop in a time of changing season
See a land of nobody
People sitting 'round a river
Consumptive nice and with garments on
They are eating fruits
And do love the peace
They are called Eloy in this old story
But I think they are living in my mind
They are the world
I want to stay here
In this land of charity
Spend my life
In a land of freedom
In a land of freedom
In a land of freedom
See the machine and follow me
And let us touch this history
Stop in a time of changing season
See a land of nobody
People sitting 'round a river
Consumptive nice and with garments on
They are eating fruits
And do love the peace
And feel so happy all their time
They are called Eloy in this old story
But I think they are living in my mind
They are the world
I want to stay here
In this land of charity
Spend my life
In a land of freedom
In a land of freedom
In a land of freedom
The lyrics to Eloy's song "Eloy" seem to describe a utopian land that the singer longs to stay in. The use of the word "machine" in the first line suggests that the singer is inviting someone to embark on a journey with them to witness the world they are describing. The song talks about a land where people are at peace, living in harmony with nature, and consuming only what they need. They sit by a river, enjoying the fruits of the land, and wearing simple garments that suggest a lack of materialistic desires. The people are referred to as Eloy, which could be a name of a tribe or a reference to a utopian civilization. However, the final line of the song suggests that these Eloy people only exist in the singer's mind, and the world they represent is unattainable in reality.
The song's message seems to call on the listener to consider what kind of future they want to live in. The contrast between the "machine" in the beginning and the "land of nobody" suggests a divide between a world dominated by technology and a more primitive, harmonious one. The singer clearly chooses the latter, expressing a desire to remain in this "land of freedom" and "charity," where people are content with minimal material possessions and at peace with their surroundings. Overall, the song conveys a strong sense of longing for a simpler, more peaceful world.

Yeah I agree. Even more so, the song "Future City" from Eloy's 'Inside' album has a certain Jethro Tull vibe happening. I still own all of their albums on vinyl, even this one with the fully functional garbage can lid die-cut cover.
