Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Eloy Lyrics

Don't rely on me as your guide.
I will be of no help,
When you stand the turn of the tide.
It's only to the individual's force
To escape the wheels of approaching deadly fate.
Don't trust your dusty rules,
Life doesn't have to mean hollowness;
If you perceive the truth within yourself,
That can give some sense to your life in time.
Stop calling heroes now;
They cannot delay the last landslide,
Neither undo your past,
Or have stand the turn of the tide.
It's only to the individual's force
To escape the wheels of approaching deadly fate.
Life doesn't have to mean hollowness;
If you perceive the truth within yourself,
That can give some sense to your life in time.
In this song, Eloy conveys the message that we are ultimately responsible for our own fate and destiny. The opening lines suggest that the singer is not a reliable guide for the listener, as everyone must chart their own path. The turn of the tide represents a metaphorical change or challenge, and the singer warns that he cannot provide any help in such situations. He points out that it is up to the individual's force to escape deadly fate, and it's not possible to rely on external forces.
The next stanza talks about the limitation of following dusty rules, which have fooled us countless times. The singer reckons that life itself doesn't have to be hollow, and it's important to perceive the truth within oneself. By charting our own paths, we can give meaning and purpose to our lives. The closing lines suggest that we should stop calling heroes now because they cannot prevent the inevitable, nor change our past. We must rely on our own force to escape the wheels of approaching fate.

Welcome, my worldly friend,
Greetings to you, traveler of the world,
Don't rely on me as your guide.
Do not depend on me to lead you,
I will be of no help,
For I cannot aid you,
When you stand the turn of the tide.
When you face a difficult moment,
It's only to the individual's force
Only through one's own strength
To escape the wheels of approaching deadly fate.
Can one avoid their inevitable demise.
Don't trust your dusty rules,
Do not have faith in outdated customs,
They've fooled you more than twice.
For they have misled you multiple times.
Life doesn't have to mean hollowness;
Existence need not be meaningless;
If you perceive the truth within yourself,
By recognizing your own inner truth,
That can give some sense to your life in time.
Your life can attain some meaning over time.
Stop calling heroes now;
Do not seek heroes now;
They cannot delay the last landslide,
For they cannot prevent the final disaster,
Neither undo your past,
Nor are they able to alter your history,
Or have stand the turn of the tide.
Or assist in your times of personal crisis.
It's only to the individual's force
Only through one's own strength
To escape the wheels of approaching deadly fate.
Can one avoid their inevitable demise.
