Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

At the birth of time
Giving way to free enterprise
Now we're ruled by crime
Frayed, overrun
In the name of prosperity
We tear down, rape the land
Rising so far, shining so bright
Nearing the might of glory and light
Savaged by the science machine
There's no place to hide
Disregarding all nature's laws
Have we got no pride
Why can't you see, can't you feel
Take a look around
Some say yes, some say no
But their vote doesn't make a sound
Rising so far, shining so bright
Nearing the might of glory and light
Just take a look at yourself and you'll find
There's still a chance to break free
Out of oblivion there's hope for new life
To live in sane purity
Take heart and heed to the call of the wild
You'll find a fresh energy
Rising so far, shining so bright
Nearing the might of glory and light
Here at my feet what remains of sociey
Slain by the dark megaforce of technology
Out in the fields you can feel warriors gathering
Fighting back without fear for they see life is withering
Rising so far, shining so bright
Nearing the might of glory and light
We should have left what we don't understand
We've ruined the garden of love
Why did we let it get so out of hand
Instead of gaining control
Why should we put our future at stake
And bear a race without soul
And though I'm part of this hellish mistake
I'm still your child mother earth
The opening lines in Eloy's "Invasion of a Megaforce" poetically describe the birth of civilization and how humanity has destroyed the once-idyllic world by subordinating everything to the pursuit of profit. Over time, the paradise gave way to free enterprise, which subsequently led to a world where crime and greed rule. Through the song, we see that the society is now frayed and overrun by industry and commerce-driven by greed, apathy, and an insatiable desire for more, at any cost. The lyrics are a poignant commentary that scrutinizes the impact of technology and industrialism on the planet and the human condition.
The singer notes that technology and science have run amok, and there's nowhere to run or hide. Across the globe, there’s an evident disregard for nature's laws and order, which results in a loss of pride and widespread destruction. The lyrics urge listeners to take a long, hard look at themselves and their surroundings. The singer implores us to realize that we must take heed and answer the call to be wild and break free before it's too late.
