Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Of a higher destination
That to fulfill you were assigned
A native maid of tender
Age and dedication
Born in a dark and restless age
You had no doubts but
Fears and asked the reasons why
There will come the day of
Liberation and glory
And we'll be relieved from
All the torture and pain
After fighting war for
Values sacred and holy
In the history of mankind
Your name will remain
Guided by your fearless force
They take up arms and heed your call
Now the propehsy comes true
The tyrant's slain in the name of god
In a rage of war
Out of the seeds of superstition
And guided by a devious plan
The tension grows as you
Approach the inquisition
For to your fate you must resign
Your deeds of valour done
Your followers desert you
Before the jury now you stand
A final sacrifice on
Your celestial mission
Condemned to burn alive
Jeanne Jeanne
Deny the voices in your mind
Jeanne Jeanne
There's stlll a chance to stay alive
We pray for you, we know
Jeanne Jeanne
Say, why go this far?
Light,
You're gliding into light
With angels at your side
Embracing you so tight
To shelter you from pain
They sentenced you in vain
Your spirit will arise
To melt with heaven's light
Eternal and divine
Your sacrifice will shine
You left a warning sign
You martyr and you saint
You worded no complaint
As at the end you faint
To rise to heavens ight
You're right
All the torture and pain
After fighting war for
Val ues sacred and holy
In the history of mankind
Your name will remain
Ligiht,
You're gliding into light
With angels at your side
Em bracing you so tight
To shelter you from pain
They sentenced you in vain
Your spirit wil arise
To melt with heaven's light
Eternal and divine
Your sacrifice will shine
You left a warning sign
You martyr and you saint
You worded no complaint
As at the end you faint
The song "Jeanne d'Arc" by Eloy is a tribute to Joan of Arc, also known as Jeanne d'Arc, a French heroine and martyr of the Hundred Years' War. The song talks about Joan's life, from her early visions to her trial and execution. The lyrics express both admiration and sorrow for her sacrifices, making her a symbol of courage, valor, and spirituality.
The song starts with a message of destiny that Joan has to fulfill, as she was born in a dark and restless age but had the dedication and courage to fight for values sacred and holy. She received a divine mandate to liberate France from the English and led the French army to several victories. However, she was eventually captured by the English, put on trial by the Inquisition, and burned alive as a heretic. The song portrays her as a hero who remained true to her mission and who left a warning sign for future generations about the dangers of superstition and fanaticism.
The lyrics of the song are poignant and symbolic, as they evoke the historical context of Joan's time, her inner struggles, and her ultimate sacrifice. The song reflects the band's progressive rock style, with powerful guitar riffs, elaborate keyboard melodies, and soaring vocals. The song has become one of the band's most popular and enduring tracks, and it has inspired many fans to learn more about Joan of Arc and her legacy.

Such a wonderful and touching song by the German prog rock band, Eloy. Joan of Arc (Jeanne D'Arc) is a heroic French-Catholic story that reminds me of once magnificent European Roman and Catholic civilization.

The Black Madonna of Orlean appears to Jeanne d'Arc at the beginning of this clip. The French people asked her for help.
