Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Where bad and good are black and white
Where it's easy to point out who is wrong
Who's to be damned and who is alright
There will be a nice for me
Somewhere in your sketch-book world
It's down to categories
It's down to the death of fantasy
'we' is holy and 'I' doesn't count
Where I follow the winds of my time
And majorities rule out doubt
I'll cheer along and stay in line
Step to step your sketch book world
It's down to categories
It's down to the death of fantasy
One is barely nothing: I surrender
Only whispers: I surrender
Can't call out loud: I surrender
May I just be dust in this world
This world is still made of me
May I cry out against the wind
It will always carry me
I'll cheer along and stay in line
Step to step your sketchbook world
It's down to categories
It's down to the death of fantasy
We praise conformity
Mesmerized by unity
The lyrics of Eloy's "Surrender" speak of succumbing to conformity and the loss of individuality in a world where everything is defined and categorized. The singer surrenders to a logical sense that divides things into good and bad, where it's easy to identify who is wrong and who is right. They give up their own will and follow the winds of their time, allowing majorities to rule out their doubts. This sketchbook world is devoid of fantasy and imagination, and one must surrender to the will to unite in order to exist in it. The singer longs to be noticed in this world, to have a place somewhere, even if it's just a single square inch in a sketchbook. Still, they feel that this world is made of them, and they cry out against the wind despite knowing that it will always carry them. In this mesmerized world of unity, conformity is praised, and individuality is lost.
The lyrics of "Surrender" reflect the struggles of conforming to societal norms and navigating a world where individuality is discouraged. The song speaks of the importance of breaking free from the constraints of conformity and finding one's own place in the world. It highlights the importance of imagination and fantasy, which are often dismissed as frivolous but are essential to a fulfilling life. Ultimately, the lyrics speak to the eternal struggle between the desire to fit in and the desire to be true to oneself.

One of my favourite Pop-prog eloy Song, with beautiful piano layering phrase, like a slap bass very eighties, and on the top like the cherry on the cake, a mix of analog synth poly comp with melodic lines. Too poor views :(

Fantastic song from Eloy! Very Kayak meets Magnum- actually even leaning towards an AOR/Progressive hybrid. They made a lot of records, but they only got a cult following outside of Germany. Nearly all German bands never made it outside of Germany which is really sad. They weren't and still aren't respected enough! I'm American, but our bands never reached the level or hardly ever reached the level of UK/Europe/Australia/New Zealand/Canada!
