Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

In nobody's time
The earth was created
The first morning starts
Sun appears in the sky
Winds stroking waves
Evening shadows tumble down
Eclipse the sun of life
Burning lights arise
People take their places
Dance a merry round
They live without fear
Help each other in their way through life
Tomorrow we will see
They forget life's goal
Destroying their future
If you see
In the sky above the sun is black
You see
Up there in white the moon gets red
You fall
Down on your knees the earth is gone
So far
You will never see it again
If you see
In the sky above the sun is black
You see
Up there in white the moon gets red
You fall
Down on your knees the earth is gone
So far
You will never see it again
They came from darkness
Right into my light
Unknown fields of signs in my mind
They made contact with my consciousness
Told me words of other worlds
Come let us see, distance of feelings
Anxious dreams so near
I feel full of fear
I tell you about my experience
Trust in your power
Follow the light
It's so easy to find it around you
Guess where it comes from
Hold it in your hand
Check up your thinking throw off your doubts
Learn to swim in the sea of confidence
I'm understandig the meaning of their words
They told me when I was young
But the day will come
When the sun is black
And the moon is red
The earth is going down
See the day will come
Thousands of people run
Recalling former times
I know so well
The time is near
The light of darkness shines
Till the end of our time
From this day
The lyrics of Eloy's song The Light From Deep Darkness describe the creation of the Earth, the evolution of mankind and the impending doom. The song starts by describing the creation of Earth, which was created from the depths of nothingness in nobody's time. The first morning starts with the appearance of the sun in the sky, winds stroking the waves, and evening shadows tumbling down, which eventually eclipses the sun of life and heralds in the night. As the night progresses, burning lights arise as people take their places and dance a merry round. They live without fear and help each other in their way of life. However, they forget about life's goal and end up destroying their future.
The next section of the song describes the impending doom that the Earth faces. If you see the sky above the sun, it is black, and if you see up there in white, the moon gets red. As a result, you will fall down on your knees, the Earth will be gone, and you will never see it again.
The final section of the song describes the singer's personal experience when he made contact with beings from other worlds, who told him about the impending doom that the Earth faces. He asks the listeners to trust in their power, follow the light, and learn to swim in the sea of confidence. The song ends by reiterating that the day will come when the sun is black, the moon is red, and the Earth is going down, and the only thing left will be the light from deep darkness.
