Mona Lisa & Mad Hatters
Elton John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow
In New York City

Until you've seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the Lord
There's people out there like you
I thank the Lord there's people out there like you

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light

This Broadway's got
It's got a lot of songs to sing
If I knew the tunes I might join in
I'll go my way alone
Grow my own, my own seeds shall be sown, in New York City

Subway's no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And I thank the Lord for the people I have found
I thank the Lord for the people I have found

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light

And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow
In New York City

Subway's no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And I thank the Lord for the people I have found
I thank the Lord for the people I have found

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why

They know not if it's dark outside or light
They know not if it's dark outside or light

Overall Meaning

In Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters Part 2, Elton John starts by reflecting on the way he used to perceive things before gaining new experiences. He mentions that Spanish Harlem, which he earlier thought were just pretty words to say, is actually a place worth visiting. He also talks about how he assumed that rose trees grew in New York City when in reality, they don't. Elton John then goes on to describe the harsh reality of living in New York City, especially for those who are less privileged. He talks about standing at the edge while people run you through, and how it takes people like those he has found to make things better. A recurring theme in this song is the dichotomy between the wealthy and poor in New York City. Elton John points out that while the wealthy children (sons of bankers, sons of lawyers) might not have to worry about many things, they are also unaware of what it is like to not be able to see the sky or know if it is dark or light outside.

The lyrics in Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters Part 2 are highly nuanced and tightly packed with meaning, highlighting different aspects of life in New York City – the good and the bad. The line “Subway's no way for a good man to go down, Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown” is especially powerful, condemning the segregation and disparity that exist in the city.

I highly doubt anyone will ever see this comment... but I want to leave it just in case at least someone does, because this song means so much to me, I discovered it early 2020 around March or April (I'm only 17) and I have listened to to it hundreds of times since. Something about this song got me through the hard year that was 2020 and I still 'thank the lord' for this song. Its just so beautiful, and real, and heartfelt, and I don't know why this song makes hard situations bearable for me.... but it does.... this song keeps my sanity and I've only visited new York once, never lived there or do I have any personal connection..... but this song speaks to me and ill never know why. This song came out before I was born but ill remember it my whole life. Maybe it's the idea that the person in the songs perspective still finds a reason to thank the lord in a negative environment.... but this song means so much to me and i can't say why, but I don't ever regret listening to this masterpiece the first time.

It will for those awake with ears and hearts. My brother was a singer songwriter piano player like Elton. He performed this and many other of EJ's songs back in the 70's nd 80's and he passed in February. Brought tears to my eyes also.
