Suspicious Minds
Elvis Presley with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Why can't you see
What you're doing to me
When you don't believe a word I say?
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds (suspicious minds)
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds

So, if an old friend I know
Stops by to say hello
Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?

Here we go again
Asking where I've been
You can't see these tears are real
I'm crying (Yes I'm crying)

We can't go on together
With suspicious minds (suspicious minds)
And be can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds

Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Let's don't let a good thing die
When honey, you know
I've never lied to you
Mmm yeah, yeah

We're caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Why can't you see
What you're doing to me
When you don't believe a word I say?

Don't you know I'm caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Don't you know I'm caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Don't you know I'm caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Don't you know I'm caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Don't you know I'm caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Don't you know I'm caught in a trap
I can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby

Don't you know I'm caught in a trap

Overall Meaning

Elvis Presley's hit song, Suspicious Mind, tells the story of a man who is deeply in love with his partner but is plagued by her suspicions of his loyalty. The opening lines, "We’re caught in a trap, I can’t walk out because I love you too much, baby," showcase the inner turmoil the singer is facing because of his love for his partner. The chorus, "We can't go on together with suspicious minds, and we can't build our dreams on suspicious minds," refers to the fact that their relationship is at a standstill because of the mistrust and doubt that exists between them.

Elvis tries to convince his partner that his love is genuine and that her unwarranted suspicions are causing harm to their relationship as he sings, "Oh, let our love survive or dry the tears from your eyes, let's don't let a good thing die, when honey, you know I've never lied to you." The lyrics reveal the hope that he wants to re-establish the trust and belief in their love and move forward in their relationship with a positive outlook. The song ends with Elvis reiterating the fact that he is caught in a trap and can’t walk out because of his deep and unconditional love for his partner, and he implores her to believe in his love.

The original version was other-worldly decades ago and this new Royal Philharmonic version is just supernatural. Elvis was always untouchable when he was firing on all cylinders. This proves just how his voice sustains through the decades. It transcends all other mortal artists. No one today sings with this conviction. Marvelous. It's all here on YouTube & Vevo, and I have all these songs elsewhere -- but, I am going to buy this one.

John LaStrada I think it's the only number 1 song with 2 endings. The fade away and comes back to end again.
