It was, in fact, started as an exploration of the Mellotron string, flute and choir sounds, so ubiquitous to Tangerine Dream's 1970s space music. However, as the composition evolved, other references seeped into the song, until it transformed into a sound reminiscent not so much of Tangerine Dream, as Klaus Schulze, one of Emdot's seminal influences.
Cryogenic Froese begins with a cold and arctic feel with a plaintive mood and minimal instrumentation: electric piano, sparse Mellotron strings and boys choir and a lone flute melody, all backed up by swirling synthesized wind effects. As the piece progresses, however, the Mellotron strings and choir build in intensity until a crescendo is reached and the track bursts into a bitter-sweet meditation on synthesizer arpeggiation and melody.
