Teardrop
Massive Attack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love, love is a verb
Love is a doing word
Fearless on my breath
Gentle impulsion
Shakes me, makes me lighter
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

Night, night of matter
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my

Water is my eye
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Of a confession
Fearless on my breath
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

You're stumbling in the dark
You're stumbling in the dark

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Massive Attack's song Teardrop are incredibly thought-provoking and require a thorough analysis to truly understand the meaning behind them. The first verse talks about the power of love, which is not just a feeling, but a verb and a doing word. The lyrics suggest that love is something that one must do, rather than just feel. The singer feels fearless while talking about love, and this idea is further emphasized in the second and third verses where they repeat "fearless on my breath" multiple times.

The second verse describes a dark night where black flowers blossom. It's a clear contrast between light and dark, with the unstoppable power of love being the only thing that makes the singer feel safe and fearless. The third verse compares water to a mirror, suggesting that the singer sees themselves in the mirror and is not afraid of what they see.

The last two lines convey the sense of vulnerability in the song. The singer is stumbling in the dark, which could represent the difficulties in life. It's possible that the song is discussing a relationship, love, and heartbreak.

For those who don't know, this song is composed by the lead singer of Cocteau Twins Elizabeth Fraser, at the time she wrote the lyrics for this song, she was dating Jeff Buckley that unfortunately happened to die of drowning in that same period, i guess no more explanation is needed, this song represents grief in all forms, the melody, the lyrics and the overall energy of the song.

Powerful I’ve only ever written a song before losing the one I love and care about but never after it’s too painful to write about it

@createseventyeight3082

She wasn't dating Jeff Buckley at the time. He was in a relationship with Joan Wasser, to whom he had recently proposed.
