Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

There Isn't Much
Emeli Sandé Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
To see how high that it could take me
I made it past the Milky Way
But it seems I'm still not even close
I'm having dinner with the king, the queen
I swear I'm living out my wildest dreams
I'm trying to give the DJ all of me
But I'm dancing like a ghost
'Cause no matter who I love
And no matter who I touch
I'm afraid there isn't much
Without you
See, look at all my stuff
You would think I had enough
But I swear there isn't much
Without you
I bought a house and named it after you
I keep it dark to kill the afternoons
I fill my bedroom up with big balloons
But there's still not much to hold (still nothing to hold)
I threw a party and I hoped you'd come
I guess the postman delivered wrong
They're trying to set me up with Mike or John
But I'd rather just get old
'Cause no matter how I'm loved (I'm loved, I'm loved)
And no matter how I'm touched (I'm touched, I'm touched)
I'm afraid there isn't much (isn't much, isn't much)
Without you
See, look at all my stuff (my stuff, my stuff)
You would think I had enough (enough, enough)
I'm afraid there isn't much (isn't much, isn't much)
Without you
And oh, God willing you'll find it in your heart
And whisper I'm forgiven
I've taken you for granted, baby, I admit it
But all I really want (baby)
All I really want
Baby, all I really want
Is you
I regret it
I get it
There's nothing and there's no one quite like you
I'm begging
You've got me on my knees this afternoon
Pathetic
But all I really want
Baby, all I really want is you
'Cause no matter who I love (I love, I love)
And no matter who I touch (I touch, I touch)
I'm afraid there isn't much (isn't much, isn't much)
Without you
See, look at all my stuff (my stuff, my stuff)
You would think I had enough (enough, enough)
But I swear there isn't much (isn't much, isn't much)
Without you
In "There Isn't Much" by Emeli Sandé, the singer describes a lavish and extravagant lifestyle that she has built for herself, with references to material wealth like buying an airplane, dining with royalty, and throwing parties. Despite all these outward symbols of success and abundance, she confesses that there is an underlying emptiness that persists without the presence of a significant other in her life.
The lyrics convey a sense of yearning and longing for love and connection, emphasizing that no matter how much she tries to fill her life with possessions and experiences, there is a profound void that only a specific person can fill. The house named after this person, the balloons in the bedroom, and the failed attempts at matchmaking all serve as symbols of her futile attempts to replace the irreplaceable.
The chorus of the song repeatedly declares that without this person, there isn't much of substance in her life. Despite being surrounded by opulence and luxury, it is the absence of this particular individual that leaves a gaping hole in her existence. The lyrics evoke a deep sense of vulnerability and emotional dependence, highlighting the importance of this relationship in defining her sense of self and happiness.
Towards the end of the song, there is a plea for forgiveness and a realization of having taken this person for granted. The singer expresses regret and a sincere desire to reconcile, recognizing that nothing and no one else can compare to the unique connection she shares with them. The song ends with a powerful declaration of true longing and a heartfelt admission that amidst all the distractions and illusions of fulfillment, what she truly desires and needs is the presence of this loved one in her life.
